  • The beginner's training techniques

    Hi everyone,

Just wondered if you would recommand any training techniques ?

Let's say hovering from left to right, back to front...Please let me know if I should try to master specific flying techniques first and which ones ?

    Thanks a lot !

If your stronger at, let's say hovering to the left than the right, then always practice your weak orientation.
This is really important other wise you will struggle the more you get into helis.

      Hi DRM Back,

Ok thanks that makes perfectly sense. Should I try with the heli with its nose facing me (rather than its tail) in order to learn how to reverse the controls ?

Not normally as tail in the swash will move relative (mode 2) to the right stick

For nose in there are a few different ways to crack it.

1 - take it up high, say 10m to 15m, and just spin it round 180. Hold it as long as you can but get ready to bail out with a 180 spin to tail in. Remember - give it positive collective, not negative, if you are losing it - gain height.

2 - Fly figure 8's, make the 8's fatter as you progress, eventually you'll be nose in without even trying

          3 - fly circuits

4 - use the sim - the safe option!

Always try all moves from left to right and right to left

          Good luck!

-edit - sorry, think I may have totally misread your original post!
Before going for nose in, be happy with tail in, and gradually move the heli towards the left and then the right, trying to maintain altitude and direction.

Once happy with that, try rotating the heli slightly each way, getting a side view. Not too far round though. Gradually increase the amount of rotation.

Always try to land the heli in a pre-determined spot after each round of practice flights.

that would be a BIG no as this is a advance way of taking of and landing,
The first thing to remember is there is no race take your time use a sim as much as you can ,but remember u may be able to do stuff on the sim but in real life its a lot differant
get some one who knows to look over the heli and at max only have -4 on down pitch so if you at any time feel un easy you can put the heli down nicley with out it slamming into the ground
start by hovering with the tail in only a few feet of the ground ,get used to the feel of the heli and the sound of the heli beleave me 2 blades spinning at high RPM is very intimadating try keeping the heli in one place a nice steady hover ( sim will help with this )
next step is to start to add alerion and crabing the heli to the left or the right until you can crab the heli 3 meter one way and then come back to your self and 3 meter the other
this will start training your brain in seeing the heli side on , do this untill you can fly the heli in a box shape 3 meter one way forward 3 meter etc
the next step is to have the heli tail in and get into a nice steady hover and in your own time add some rudder just enough so the heli is at a 45 degree angle and hold it in that position in the hover do this both ways
this should be enough to get you under way

this web site makes for good reading

When I learnt nose in I slowing moved the tail round say 20deg either way then moved it back tail in and gradually rotated the tail further round to side in, then back to tail in. And just built it up over about 6 months edging further round till your nose in.
You need to learn the small corrections rather than just going up high and spinning it round and trying to stop it crashing.

Good luck oh and practice practice and a bit more practice
