  • First radio to last...

I thought i'd posted this, but seems lost? was it the link to the model shop site? They have a 2.4 ff7 and rcvr, 4 x S3152 servos and rx batt for £250, which seems pretty good, or is there a catch?

So brief version of orginal post:

    Looking at Futaba FF7 / 8FG or Spektrum DX7(s/se?) DX8.

Any opinons? DX8 seems a tad unreliable from t'internet info. Is this any better now?

What else that is good value and will last is worth looking at?

Need to know more, but FF7 set's good price but maybe more than you want to spend and not needed for most heli flying, not sure you'd use four S3152s for instance, but you'd want something faster on the tail IIRC. A Spektrum DX6i combo would be a cheaper choice, coupled with your own choice of servos to suit the heli you want to fly them with. I will now be flamed to oblivion.

      Thanks for your reply.

I am pretty set on a nitro heli at some point, so 7 minimum in case of governor in future.

I was thinking about a raptor 50 (see other thread) and had read that some people had used 3152 on cyc and throttle on a rptr 50, so perhaps useful.

Yeah, I'm really leaning towards the 8FG, even if it means a bit of saving up. That said, the 8 channel, not the 14 channel version.
I have a soft spot for Futaba, some residual brand loyalty from when i used it with boats and cars when i were a youngun' (20 years ago tho, i'm sure things have changed, lol)

Wont go wrong with the FG8 mate, or Futaba. Like you, I used Futaba for years when doing all the BRCA races in 1/8 off road and circuit racing, and never had a problem with them. I went with Spektrum DX7 when I got back into the hobby with 2.4, but have since changed to Futaba 12FG after the troubles with my DX8.

                  The 8FG is 14 channel

It was launched as a 8 channel set (8FG) then a firmware upgrade came along that included making it 14 channel WIN !!!

How ever the 8FG Super (the one you buy today) is already 14 channel. But people with the non super can upgrade the firmware to 14 channel Free

so you will be getting a 14 channel set what ever 8FG you buy, How ever i dont think any where would sell you a non super version as the non super is not longer made.

Hope that makes it a little clearer.

There are two sets, there is the 8fg and the 8fg Super. Futaba recently release firmware version 4.0 for the 8FG. Its a free update and you can do it yourself, the update essentially turns the 8fg into the Super 8FG with 14 channels and all the features of the 'super'. The extra channels have been available for a while now on the 8fg but the last update also included things like fast model switching and a few other little features.

So now there is only a slight physical difference between the two sets, the switches on the Super are in a slightly different place but as far as I know thats it. So buy the cheaper set and run the upgrade - its dead easy to do.

Having said that the prices are also very similar - I think you may be comparing a combo set with a transmitter only set. The combo comes with RX and servos - you'll probably never use the servos.

easy Call inwood models ask them for an 8FG and and 2 7channel receivers

they will swap out the 14 channel receiver for you and even take out the servos if not required.

You have to phone and ask for exactly what you want a lot of times

plus inwoods will beat the helicopter shops price wise for a tranny 99% of the time.
