if it was me i would set it up in rate mode so the heli isnt spinning,then fly away to your hearts content in hh mode,that way if your gyro gain is set one way for rate and one way for hh if you accidently switch it into rate mode you will get a nasty surprise,ask me how i know,cost me a fair few quid on my trex 700,or else just have your gyro gain switch set to hh on both modes

just a thought, if i increased rate to same percentage as HH would nothing change if switch was activated? or does it not work like that

Yes thats exactly how it works. You are effectively setting the gyro to HH in both switch positions by setting the values to be the same
