  • DX7 Battery charging

    Morning all

I have just got myself a DX7 which has 2 Ni-mh batteries but no charger

The batteries have 2 connectors, 1 that plugs into the tx and a servo type plug

Can I charge them with my lipo charger (it does charge Nimh and is fully programable) and is the servo plug the charge lead?

Also what settings are folk using assuming this is possible?

Sorry for being a bit thick but it was easy with the DX6i!!

    cheers

Mine is the same, charge it outside the tx with my lipo charger on nimh setting, charge it at 1/10 the capacity, or fast charge at 1c.

        Thanks fellas!!!

Can I charge via the servo plug? If so, I can make a lead to plug into the charger

Yeah, I charge via servo plug, as its easier than sourcing the other plug.

I would think that's the idea to avoid unplugging from the tx. Check that the servo red and black leads are the same electrically as the charge connector.
I've got a DX7 and I've been thinking of fast charging it through the normal slow charge socket. I assume it's a direct connection without a diode in the way, or do you have to do a mod? My Multiplex Cockpit can be fast charged through the normal socket.

You do need to be careful with fast charging NiMhs as depending on the delta V setting you choose, you can either find the charge terminates early or doesn't terminate at all and the batteries get very hot. If you can time limit the charge as well that will help.

Slow charging is boring but reliable. Even if you forget to slow charge the night before you can still do it while getting other bits together. One hour of slow charge at 150ma gives about 1 hour of operation.

After a fast charge, if you make a note of the mah that have gone in, you can expect 2 hours for every 300mah.

I know this sounds picky, but NiMhs do go eventually and I've seen people arrive at the flying field with tx batteries they've just charged only to find out they had a false peak and only minutes of charge are available. Every now and then it's a good idea to let the tx discharge until the alarm goes off to find out what the capacity really is. Ideally about a week after a full charge so you can allow for self discharge. You can always do it on the day you were going to fly, but something else happened.

get yourself a battery conditioner/ charger, they only cost about £35 totally adjustable charging also discharge, and battery storage facility charge. Great bit of kit

Personally I'd just buy a Futaba or JR stock trickle charger for about £5 and leave it to charged over night. Job done.
I've left mine on charge for days at a time before with no ill effect.

If using a Futaba charger you'll need to reverse the polarity on the plug (swap wires round).
