  • Hovering nose in

This may seem like a silly question but how do you handle the controls when flying nose in?

I have been thinking if heli is nose in and it moves to the left then I must move the stick left to compensate.

Should I be instead thinking as if I am behind the heli and I need to move the heli left to compensate.

I'm not sure if this makes sense but I guess I am asking how it is normally taught or is it something that can only learnt through practice and to become instinctive.

Basically match the stick movement with the movement of the heli. Ie if the heli drifts to the left then match with left aileron, drifts right right aileron if the heli moves backwards follow it with elevator (stick up) moves forward stick down. hope this helps and yes its something that comes with practice, preferably on a simulator

when you are nose in you have to reverse every thing that you would do if it was faceing away from you

Terry's explanation is exactly what I think when I'm doing it. With enough practice you'll be able to do it without thinking

I imagine that im propping up the rotor disc, so if the heli moves left I move the stick left, heli goes away from me means I move the stick forward etc.

Think about correcting into the movement (moves to the right, so you move the stick to the right). At some point, you will not be thinking about it, which means you've cracked it. Personally, I would stick the training skids back on and spend a day learning to hover nose in, just like you did when you started. Get the heli nose in right from the start (don't take off tail in then spin it round, put the heli down nose in), and have a great day bumping about keeping it at a height where you can bring her down safely if she gets away from you.

I've helped a few people learn nose in this way, but I guess a sim would be just a good, but its more fun in real life !!
            Cheers,

ha this is what i do also
just basically following the helis movement to correct rather than as normal tail in flight. ie heli drifts left i correct with right (if that makes sense)
nose in heli drifts left i apply left to bring it back.
god im confusing myself now lol
              works for me though

this may help you or may not the way i learnt to hover nose in is i practiced for half n hour everyday for a week in my dinner break at work.i placed the heli on the floor facing me and powerd it up slowly and watched what it did.it started going to the right so i had to put left input in n just kept doing that till i masterd that.then ide power it up some more till the tail started moving then i masterd that too.the next stage was to see which way the heli went ie forwards or backwards then hey presto nose in take off, then when outside you can hover nose in even better.thats how i taught myself anyway.
