  • Setup: Back to basics

    Hi Guys.

I've now removed the AR7000 from my Raptor50, and replaced it temporeraly with a little JR 35Mhz RX (6 channel).

I seem to have forgotten alot! I'm trying to get the GY401 to lock... but it sits there flashing at me. I have the gain cable plugged into Aux2, but as the TX is the JR6210, it's a 6 channel, so Aux2 is meaningless to it.

What should I be doing with a 6 channel radio, to get my gyro to lock and stay in HH mode?

(This is the first of many questions, as I seem to have forgotten everything... )

    Sorted!
Plugged the gain cable into the Gear channel, and I have control over the gyro now...
Not sure if it's all setup right though. Not sure what to set the EPA to for the gear channel, but I do have a sold HH light now.
Took her out to the garage, and SHE STARTED FIRST TIME!!
    Oh yes!
I richend bu 2 clicks AntiClockwise.. prefer to use fuel than by a new motor.
Not sure if it sounds right or not... But at idle, I have a small amount of smoke..
Idled for 2 minutes, and the base was very cool still.
So, going to take it to a nearby field, and see if we can get a hover.
A quick check on the gyro..
In std mode, if I stand behind the heli, and put a tail rotor down, facing forward, I push the rudder stick left, and the blade tilts towards the shaft.. that is, the same way I push the rudder stick.
    I think that's right, yeah?
Then, in HH mode, if I push the tail to the right, the bent blade goes to the right. Is that right??

In rate mode, pushing your rudder stick to the right makes the tail slider go towards the tail casing, if not then reverse the rudder servo switch on your tx. Once thats sorted make sure your gyro is set in the right direction by pulling the tail toward you, the tail slider should move away from you towards the the tail blades and pushing it away from you makes the tail slider come towards the the tail case, if this is wrong then flip the little rev/norm switch on the gyro.

Thats it, same in either rate or HH.

Right, took the heli to a nearby football field.
Started up, and all was fine.. Seemed to spin very fast to get it to lift. Was a bit worried I was over reving near mid stick, but it may be because I'm not used to it. I have a linear throttle curve, with -4, +5, +11 on pitch. Does that seem OK?
Anyway, took off, and very wobbly... Rusty as hell! But it came back slowly. Did some drifting stuff, side on small slow fly bys...
        Then it happened...
I was flying by, slowly, around mid stick, heli about 5 feet off the ground, when the engine suddenly seemed to die.. but came back. Heli dropped a foot or two... It happened twice in around 3 seconds... and nearly went in... So I flew it back to a landable bit of ground.
Felt the base plate.. could keep my finger there for around 3 or 4 seconds. Decided not to tempt fate, so packed up. After 4 or 5 minutes, checked the base again, but now it was hotter. That's normal, right?
It had loads of spoke, more at take off, but that's normal, I think.
So now I MUST find out what caused that... Any ideas? It seemed to drop revs, and come back, then drop, then come back.. very quickly. I richened 2 clicks before the flight.
I started it and let it idle... and all was fine, but twice, during idle, it just cut. Engine sounded OK before...
Oh, please engine boffins, please help. Don't think it was a glitch. Can a glitch only effect the throttle? The heli was very stable when it happened... Just dropped and went up, then dropped, and then up again.

OK, so, maybe 2 clicks anti clockwise then? I'll give that a bash tomorrow then. The heli was smoking a lot, and it looked like the fuel was going pretty fast, so I though it was maybe a bit rich already. Also, straight after the flight, the engine seemed not too hot - which all indicated that the heli was rich enough. But I'll try richen it a bit more.

I'd lean it out if it's smoking and using a lot of fuel.

OK.. found a (very unlikely) problem, but maybe a tell-tail sign of something?

The fuel pipe that runs from the top of the main fuel tank, to the Mp5, has a small black burn mark on it. It's at the point where the silicon pipe touches the MP5. You can see it in the first picture. I should add, it has not gone through.. nore has it gone 'melted'. It's just a black, rough mark. Not even rough.. So, I don't know if this caused a fault.

I was told the silicon shouldn't have a problem against the MP5.. but it seems it does. See attached photo.

I've now tied the silicon pipe to the frame, to keep it off the MP5. I notice that where the silicon pipe goes into the MP5, it's a bit brown. Like, dirty brown, inside the tube. This may be residue from the burning of the tube further up?

So, either my silicon tube can't handle the heat, and this may be normal? Or else, my MP5 is getting too hot? I touched it by mistake after a flight.. and s**t, it burnt!

                            So, can anyone comment?

Then, I've also attached a photo of the pipe from the header tank to the fuel tank, and .. does it look OK? Looks a bit long. Maybe not...

And finally, a shot of the ... something. Not sure what it's called.. The ball thing on the head. There seems to be a small but of 'rust'? Looks like rust.. Everything moves easily, and I have applied good oil to it.. Look OK?

pipes look ok i think the black spot is just where the pipe has "polished" the ally on your pmp5 probably due to vibration.
the coulor of the swash is the metal, looks like copper mines the same exactly... can you clean the bit of crud off the ball with a bit of hard plastic using it as a scraper?
