  • Building a heli

    Hello
I am new to helicopters and have just started to learn about them i used to fly planes and race cars about 20 years ago but have done nothing since and have always wanted to learn to fly helicopters so i thought i'd have ago.

I started off with a twister bell 47g and then got a Twister cp v2 which at the moment i can hover nose out and side on not quit got the nose in of to a tee yet.
I have been given a brand new raptor 30 V2 kit which needs to be built so before i start is there anything i need to change or lookout for during the build or tips on things to do.

I have decided to go for a OS 37 engine but i'm not sure which radio and servos to go for also a gyro so a bit of advice would help please.

Gyro will have to be a 401 and 9254 tail servo, the way foward is 2.4ghz radio spectrum dx7, the servos supplied are not that good with the dx7 so invest in some new ones futaba 3152 are a good all rounder to start off with.

And also find a club nearby and a sim phoenix is the latest and best one on the market at the moment
If You Cant Dazzle' Em With Brilliance, Baffle' Em With emmmm you know the rest

Make sure you use Locktite (medium strengh thread locker) on all metal to metal fixings (nuts and bolts etc), and make sure you twist the tail belt in the right direction or you will have all kinds of problems. Oh and enjoy the build, don't rush it, if you take time to follow the instructions, it will be a much more rewarding build, (and a safer heli to boot). Have fun, and if you get stuck ask on here and somebody will glady help.

As for the servo's and stuff

DX7 Tx + Rx (can't remeber the name)
        401 Gyro + 9254 tail servo
S3152's on Pitch and cyclic (or JR DS811's)
and a JR 591, or Sanwa 102 or the like on the throttle.
-I don't crash, I just land with enthusiasm.

A couple of 600n's with stuff on them that makes them fly..
A 550 fbl with even more stuff on it to make it fly
And a Mars 470 which needs stuff putting on it to make it fly

        And a DX8 too

Oh & dont forget to grease the feathering shaft & one way bearing
          Pretty basic but sometimes overlooked.
Spend time getting the flybar and paddles correct too.

Spectrum servos should be fine for learning with, although to save changing them later (Which you will) I should invest in some Futaba 3152's @ Around £24 each. They're a fairly accurate good all round digital servo.
Use one of the spectrum sevos on the throttle or if you can stretch to it another 3152.

As mentioned the GY401 is the best performing Gyro for the money but get the 9254 with it.
          Cheers,

          Gazza

I came back to rc helis having flown fixed wing 20 years ago. This heli stuff is much more interesting!
On your rappy cnside rthe 3rd clutch bearing upgrade from QuickUK, and more essential the Steel tail rotor hub.
If you were flying advanced aerobatics with your planks, then you might progess fast in which case you could build it with a metal head block.
