  • Lipo House Insurance

I wanted to know if anyone has house hold insurance for lipo battery's causing damage to property? We live in a flat thus I have to store my 2 X 2200mah in a A4 fireproof safe.

I am very new in this hobby and and read allot of horror stories let alone seen some horific pictures.

I am very much aware of these batteries and do respect them and have read a few tips on charging and discharging lipo's.

I have a Thunderpower TC610 ACDC charger making sure that it will do the job.

So how safe (considering I;'ve followed all the rules and steps) are they and do you guys trust these batteries while out or sleeping at night?

Mine are in a cabinet and I sleep ok . They hardly explode by themselves, usually it's charging error, shorted wires, damaged pack.
Fireproof safe isn't the best idea, if your lipos ever go on fire, the pressure will turn your fireproof safe into a bomb. Lipo fire doesn't need any oxygen.

As paranoid I am, the probability of lipo going on fire is probably less than your boiler going on fire.
Re insurance, I think if your house is insured, it will cover lipo fire.

im also paranoid about li-po's (im sure many others are too) in the house but i dont have a garage to keep them in, the shed is never a constant temperature so dont like keeping them in there!
as already said i dont think they will just self combust, its usually due to being treated wrong!

NOW i did have a AA battery in the TX i use on my sim go bang the other day, typically my missis was playing it, we were all sat around watching just heard a LOUD pop, then smoke so i grabbed it and took the TX outside and when i took the back off 1 of the batteries was split and bubbling. never had that happen before in anything!

I'm not worried bout my batts catching fire, not cos they are outside in the garage but I don't think they will just go bang.

I look after them and like said I believe they have to be mistreated for something to happen.

As for the the insurance side of things a fire is a fire so I would of thought this is what the cover is in place for?

Brothers house had recently been redecorated after a lipo fire... Fire brigade came fairly quickly, so it was only the living room that had to be completely redecorated.

Lost all his lipos .. a few 5000 6s packs, a duralite... very messy.

              Hi Josh..

TBH.. not 100% sure. My Bro seldom flys and he kept the lipos in a large metal container just sat in the living room. Probably hadn't moved or seen dalight for months. He was out at work, his missus and daughter upstairs, and it just went up. They smelt the smoke early, and got out the house.

i never heard of a li-po just bursting in to flames unless it was being charged or just after charging (excess heat) i just keep mine (6 x 6s and 4 x 3s) in my hallway in my ally heli cases, been there for over a year no problems ( mind you i must admit, i do check them nearly every nite before bed )

Nearly ALL mobile phone use 3.7v Lipo batteries, how many worry about charging them or keep them in the garage?
I doubt you would need extra fire cover ofr your mobile blowing and causing a fire, its paranioa I tell ya, if that worried, get IC

thanks for all the resuring comments but its now come to my missus telling me I need to get rid of the batteries as she is worried they explode which means giving up the hobby. I know I am being paranoid but there is always just once, as Andy's brother's place went up. There is the issue of charging as I can only do that in the flat. I am very aware of charging and would not leave the room - I am considering getting an extinguisher.

I should of keep the issue to myself re exploding lipos from the girlfriend, my own fault really

TBH... As said, Not sure why it went up. Maybe a short in the contacts, or the metal storage tin he stored them? In the end, storeys like my bros are few and far between. Remember that laptop batteries etc are all of the same stuff, and do we ban these from the house?

Just treat them with respect. Not to overcharge, and to store them carefully, you should be fine! For me, I still keep all my lipos in the house so they are a fairly constant temperature. The only thing I have done is buy a few Army Ammo boxes to store them all in, and lined them with non conductive material.

btw.. charging... just don't leave them unattended, ensuring correct charging for the lipos

Get some lipo bags, that will lower the risk substantially (from already quite low), both in storage and during charging. You can show some youtube videos to your girlfriend, just don't tell her that lipo smoke is caustic
A good charger (I use powerlab 8 and its smaller borther cellpro multi, but there are other brands which make safe chargers as well) is another thing you can get to minimize the risk.
