Hi Guys, this is my first post ever, and I am very much hoping you all can help me out,
I bought a walkera 4 and loved it, couldn’t fly it that great, but never the less loved every minute, sadly it had one to many crashes, and although it could have been repaired, moving house ended all hope of that happening, now a year later settled in, and ready to have another try.
I have no Idea which chopper to go for this time round, I do know that I want one a little bigger, (electric)
Is it possible to have some sort of thin lightweight cable running direct from house main socket to a transformer then to the chopper?
“ I am talking out in the back garden “
This will allow me to practise lifting, left & right, back & forward, limited movement I know, but I can practice without charging/recharging and there is always the wait in between charges, I think this system would perhaps over heat the motors,
I can add a lead weight about a mtr from chopper onto the electric cable, this way the cable will stay straight.
    Is this possible?

    Thank You
    Regards
    Gary

I couldn't recommend the tethered approach... you only need to reach the end of the cable, and it'd get ugly.

The sim is a good idea... learn the basics on there. That way you don't break anything real.

The larger the heli, the more docile it is.

Not counting my foray into IC heli's, I started out with a 450 size electric, which is quite twitchy and difficult to control compared to my new T-Rex 600 electric which is a big pussycat and much easier to fly.

      Cheers - Rob

I third the sim approach. It's perfectly possible to learn to hover on a sim and transfer that directly to Real Life. I know at least one idiot who's done it.

I learnt to fly on a sim first, then when i first tried my protech zoom (smaller than a 450) i could hover it easily

                    Phoenix Simulator + T-Rex 600

Huge thank you, I have nothing at the moment neither aircraft or controller, all was cleaned out when we moved house, so I start again, I wasn't on-line then so all this help is great, the T-rex 600 is just what I think I want, can you recommend a good Controller ?
Will I need the controller to use the Flight Sim,

                    Appreciated..

a Trex 600 is a 600mm blade (1250mm dia rotor) big heli. Unless you live in a stately home its too big for ther garden. Its also a really dangerous thing if not under control. Best flown at a club field.
It is possible to learn to hover a 450 size (such as trex450) in an area half the size of a tennis court. but you do need at least that space. also despite its small size it will bite and hurt you or others if it gets out of control - the blades are doing at least 2400 rpm - so you don't want dogs, cats, kids etc nearby and you don't want it taking a leap into over the fence into the neighbours plot either.
Having said that I've flown a lot in my garden and in the field at the bottom of my garden without any problems.
As regards batteries - a 450 and three batteries (and two chargers) will keep you going almost continuously. Once charger is enough to begin with as you need to bit of a chill out between flights but it is on the 3rd and 4th flights of the session that progess is made.
A trex600 and three batteries as quite an investment as the batteries are expensive!

All safety points very valid, but I still maintain a 600 will be easier to learn on than a 450. It's a huge investment though, if you get it wrong! I have flown mine in my garden, but only pootling about, hovering here and there. Gardens tend to shrink rather rapidly when it goes pear-shaped

Time spent waggling the sticks on a good sim is very worthwhile. You can learn a lot on there even before you go anywhere near a real heli.

                          Cheers - Rob

I heard the other day of someone who bought EIGHT 6S1P LiPo's for his T-Rex, at a cost of £1.5k

Two will do me, for now...
