  • Yet another Gyro question, I NEED HELP FROM THE ADDICTS!!!

    Alright Lads

i need ya help if that's alright!

The tail lock gyro on my honey bee is well... ill be honest pants, every time i fly it its like the tail keeps slowly moving away and when i trim to try and stop this the gyro fails and i start to pirouetting uncontrollably so i just drop the power so have to reset the trim and i am back to square 1 again i don't now what to do???

I dont no if its a setting on the gryo or is it just me????
I have a align heading hold gyro in my concept 30 which aint flying at the mo so I dunno if I can pinch the gyro out of that

    All Ideas would be appreciated!!!!

    Thanks lads

    John!!!!

    John,just buy a gyro on here maybe a gp750/spartan ds760/spartan quark..etc.
The gyro on the honey bee is probably rubbish.
i would steal one of the concept..Just buy another..the gp750/780 are so easy to set up...Or depending on your flying maybe a csm 720/spartan quark ..all depends how much you wanna spend...

You can't trim a head holding gyro - it will just spin round.

The problem will be with vibration. Have a hunt for obvious stuff - blades out of balance etc. Try a different gyro pad (it may be too thick or too thin)

Well done for even getting it in the air - I eventually crushed mine and bought a Trex

Sounds like a dodgy Gyro, The phoenixtech GT9 is only 40 quid and you can get it from Craig at black country models. The size of a 50p and is real easy to set up. Holds perfectly too.
                  Happy flying!

It is possible to trim a heading hold gyro to stop it drifting. Lots of people have done that. It isn't possible to trim every gyro to stop it drifting, it depends on what is causing the problem. Some gyros are better than others, even from the same batch, as the sensors cannot be made the same. A heading hold gyro needs to know what rudder position corresponds to tail hold or no drift. This is usually centre position on the rudder stick. When you switch on the gyro, it calibrates itself, to find out what output from it's internal rotation sensor corresponds to no turn. Then when you take off it will know that when it reads that output that the tail is not drifting. Unfortunately life is a bit more complicated and the output from the sensor will change as the gyro warms up. The gyro will then start to drift unless the electronics is good enough to know about temperature change and compensate for it. Mems or SMS gyros will do this. If you change the trim on the tx the gyro will think you want a slow turn and will adjust to try to give you that. It will think it is turning slowly when in fact you have made it stop drifting. All gyros were like this once and people used to allow the gyro to warm up to flying field temperature for 5 or ten minutes before switching on. With one of my better gyros I also had to switch on leave for a minute for the gyro to warm up inside to flying temperature, then switch off for a few seconds and then switch on again. Then it was reasonable. I bought a SMS gyro second hand for £50 and it is super stable. As you get better you'll spend less and less time hovering and you won't notice the drift. Then you'll want to fly backwards and do 3D stuff and you'll need a good gyro again. You could just ignore the drift for now and start controlling the tail.
