As a complete novice i'm looing for some advice re giro set up.
I have an old Hirobo Shuttle in v good condition running on Sanwa radio gear, now for the question - I was given an HK401b giro which i've tried to fit (after sorting the wiring) but it won't operate the srm 103 tail servo - anyone any experience of this, know a fix or can tell me the best thing to do (maybe replace the existing servo)?

    Any help gratefully recieved.
    Thanks

Hi ? And welcome to the forum.
I've no idea about your gyro but someone will know and chip in soon.

have you tried the servo in one of the uther chanels to make sure the servo is operating? and you say for the gyro you had to sort the wiring? what exsactly did you have to do?

The hk401 gyro is a bit on the doubtful side. They claim it is as good as the Futaba one which is unlikely to say the least. There are videos of how to make it work involving using glue to fix the circuit board inside the case. Sorting out the wiring is not usual and not a good sign. A second hand gyro bought from this forum for about £50 is the usual advice. HobbyKing claims and HobbyKing performance vary a lot. Some of their stuff is ok.

i will assume the gyro is a futaba 401 clone
so i think it should have a switch for std and digital servos
flick the switch to norm (not the direction switch)

My hk401b is very good - holds my heli steady (although it's only a 450) try fliching it to normal serv mode the get the heli staying striaght in rate mode and then flick between rate and heading hold quickly 3 times. This then stores the centre position for HH

I had a HK401 and could not get it to work - it would just always drift although the mechanical setup was OK, in the end I turned the end points up to 150% on the gain channel and it was fine. However I decided to get a new tail servo so went for a GY520 combo and noticed with that that I could leave the gain channel end point at 100% and it held rock steady. Certainly the 520 seems better but the 401 was still fine for me to practice hovering and basic manoevering (I did hot glue fix).

As others have said, check if the servo works in a different channel and make sure it is on norm mode. Other thing to check is the limit adjustment has not been set to zero as if it is, the servo wont move

                Hi
It could be that the wiring on the srm (sanwa servo) is one othe old wiring method. I believe there was a "black" or "blue" plug at one time and they are not wired the same as Futaba/JR.
The signal wire on the srm could be different position in the plug.
Try using a Futaba or JR servo on the gyro.

Hi Guys - and thanks for your replys.
When I say sorted wiring I had to swap the signal and -ve wires to match the old airtronics connectors (black, black, red) The 103 servo works perfectly with the old mechanical gyro but nothing with the HK401. if I plug one of the 102 servos into the HK it only works in one direction with the tail rotor stick - do I have a duff 401? It def is not in digital mode by the way.

V frustrating as I thought this would be an easy install and great for my novice flying!!!

Any more ideas / similar experiences?

On the Futaba 401 you need to switch on in heading mode to avoid the red led blinking. You can then switch into rate mode. I've just been using rate mode as an experiment and the rate mode seems to hold the tail farly steady in sideways flight. On Phoenix the tail doesn't hold at all. I intend trying the gyro set to 50% sensitivity to see what its like , unless someone tells me that's a really bad idea. I know the cheaper gyros can hold the tail quite well, but the Futaba 401 and others have SMS or MEMs temperature compensation. If HK are to be believed then theirs does as well. Gyro sensors vary a lot a and to get all gyros working the same takes good engineering and quality control. You can either go for Futaba or HK whoever has a better name.
