Beginner needs help (already, lol)

Hi all

Just taken the plunge and bought a CX2, and, after seeing all the recommendations on these forums, Phoenix as well. Plan was to get a fair bit done on the sim before being let loose on the CX2. And that's when I hit my first snag. Got Phoenix up and running but am having problems with the E-Flite tx (LP5DSM). I hook it up to the dongle and Phoenix recognizes it and let's me calibrate and play no problem. However, the batteries start to cook and the voltage drops shockingly quickly. A brand new set will have the tx low voltage alarm sounding in under two minutes. And they come out of the tx very hot indeed!! If I unplug the trainer lead then the tx performs fine.

Where do you think the problem lies? With the lead, the dongle, or the tx? I have ordered a new DX6i which should be here in a day or two, but don't fancy frying it if I can help it. Any suggestions?

Oh, and just to let you all know....... I got frustrated at not being able to use Phoenix so fired up the CX2 anyhow. One set of Lower Rotor blades later........... Rough justice, lol!!

When I used to use phoenix with my dx6i the batts do get a bit warm but nothing to worry about, don't think tx's are meant to be used long periods of time anyway, max real flight time for a elec is 9/10 mins, nitro about the same on just hovering around.

So to have it on for 20/30 mins the batts will get warm.

No, the batteries aren't getting a bit warm, they are getting hot, the voltage is plummeting and then I get the error message in Phoenix saying that my tx is no longer connected. This happens with brand new batteries in under 2 minutes. Got through 12 batteries earlier in a matter of minutes, 4 of them duracells. Definitely a problem somewhere.

The dx6i will be fine, I've used it for over an hour on phoenix before, it does get hot, I've never had a problem with it though

Glad you replied first Kev, I would have been worried about that and thought something was wrong - do all Dx6i's get warm in normal use or is it just on phoenix ?

I've never noticed my DX6i getting hot at all. either on Phoenix or flying for real. I'm not sure that the RF transmitter is even on when using Phoenix since all the I/O stuff is done via the dongle as the batteries seem to last a lot longer when using the simulator, I might be wrong though.

I've had 3 and all do, odd, I have 2 at the moment, one is packaged ready to go to horizon to get fixed, so we'll see if it comes back any different

not sure about the dx6i but the dx7 stays the same as you pluged it in
i think i would be worried to mark if my tx started to get warm

i had my dx6i) on the sim for over 3 hours non stop, flyin and watchin tv. does not get warm ever

Hmmm interesting, mines fine in flying but gets warm on the sim, best send other one back to horizon when the first one comes back

The DX6i I have for the sim, never gets hot either......

Had connection problems, but that was due to the lead, not the tx....

Sorted that and it works fine.

my Dx6i has never got remotely warm, and that can be several hours attached to Phoenix.

You have got the Tx switch OFF when you plug in the phoenix dongle haven't you?

Yeah, switch off, gets warm not like red hot, its no problem, I will send it to horizon to have it looked at

Any thoughts on the LP5DSM, or am I just best off waiting for the DX6i to arrive? It's quite disconcerting. It displays 5.6 volts steady, and jumps to 4.2 the absolute second the lead is plugged into the back. A few seconds later and the display won't even show the numbers any more, just jumbled, fading half-characters. I'm getting kinda twitchy, lol.
