  • Help with Electric!

I have an Eco-8 that uses the standard 'Sport' motor and electronic speed controller. I've recently purchased a Sanyo 3300mAh battery, and until recently have been enjoying arround a 10min 'hovering' time (still practicing!).

The problem I have now is, that even after a full trickle charge, I am not getting anywhere near the flying time I was - in fact somtimes there does not appear to be enough power to take off!!!!

I have two thoughts. One, the new (and VERY expensive!) 3300mAh battery has gone bad and the second is that the motor is to blame.

Can anyone help on what might be the problem, and advise me on how to avoid this for the future?

    Hi Shamus,

There are a few possibilities here, one is that the battery has now got a "Memory" which basically means that they sometimes set their own level as when they think they are fully charged but they are actually not. This can happen if for example the pack is partially charged, as whereever it stopped charging at is where it will think fully charged is. It could also be that one of the cells has gone bad which means it wouldnt take a full charge no matter what you did with it.

The other possibility is that there is that the brushes in the motor have simply worn out, which means while the motor will still run it in fact draws allot more current than it should, thus resulting in the pack draining very quickly indeed.

The quickest and easiest way to find out which of these, or maybe something completely different is the cause of your problem is to get access to (buy or borrow) a charger such as a Supernova with an ammeter and a discharge function, if you discharge and charge the pack 2 or 3 times and see how much current it takes to charge it up fully the third time you will know for sure if your pack has a bad cell or not.

    I hope this helps,

    Cheers,

    Pete.
