  • Going Bonkers!!!

    Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen.
Sorry to have to say this but I am a Newbie and have just joined yr forum. I have been reading all your threads for about four hours this afternoon, the building of the T-Rex and that 'bloke' doing the hedge trimming with his heli!!
Anyway, I am going mental trying to work out what machine to buy....
I joined a local 'club', great bunch of people, they fly planes and heli's. When I went up to see the club they were all flying planes, so I dived in and got myself a ARC Ready and all the gear. Second time I went they were flying heli's. Thats wot I want to buy now!!
After talking to the heli people its down to a rappy 50 v2/30 v2. Or go the electric way with maybe a T-Rex 450 se v2 or maybe a T-Rex 600e (apparently you can fly electrics in yr garden?) or does anyone know anything better?. Which one guys!! Please put me out of my misery...(I know about the Phonix sim). Sorry its gone on a bit. I promise to do smaller threads in the future. Tks again
    Terry

knight 50 sport. same money as a raptor 30 for the airframe and you get something that will last you without needing upgrades.

      Very quick there Ade

The Knight 50 does indeed get a good review, and is held in high regard. However, if you were completely new to this, and the only guy in your club to own one, it may make life slightly more difficult than if you owned a Raptor like everyone else. It'd assist in setup, training and so forth.

And when it comes to the inevitable repairs, having club members who know the models inside out will certainly be beneficial.

Perhaps you could go the Raptor route for convenience for learning, then when you can fly circuits comfortable, upgrade to a Knight? The Raptor would sell easily.

...and welcome to the forum. If you live near Northampton, get yourself along to the 3D Masters in a weekends time.

      Cheers - Rob

I would go for the same type of model your club mates have they will be more helpfull with that,
I think you need to consider raptor 30 or raptor 50,
If it was me id go for the 50 if you can afford it they are more stable than the 30 and easier to learn on

You can fly electric in the garden, but you might hit the garage wall hard like I did last night. Keep it safe especially in the early days!! Keep all flying to the club.

Need new blades, shafts and undercarriage for my Trex 450 now
Note to self, Must Fly more

            I really think you'd get a shock with a T-rex 600E in the Garden....

Raptor Titan 50 size is a good solid machine ideal for a 1st helicopter and most Clubs have someone that can help with that for set-ups etc.

50 Size machines are more stable than the 30's and repair costs are not that far away from each other. 60 size plus is where repairs start costing you.

I would say if you have the availability of a club then to start with look to IC rather than electric, longer flight times and more constant flying in the early days really helps.

and I agree with the point of to begin with having similar helis to those already used in the club, lots of help available.
              All the best

                Hi All,
Wot a great bunch of people. Thanks for getting all those replies for me, so quick.
The people who fly heli's at the club I am at flies mainly Raptor 50 v2, there are a few T-Rex 450 V2. To be honest, I like the look of the raptor 50 so after all your help I am going to take the plunge and go for a raptor 50 V2. Wot mags do heli people read???

Thanks again for all help.......I will be back!!

                  Sounds like a good plunge!

Small electrics like the 450SE are fun, but probably best suited for flying as a second heli when you know what you're doing.

There are a few RC heli mags on the market these days, although places like WHS still tend to fail to stock them, favouring predominantly fixed wing mags. You generally have to pick heli mags up from model shops or subscribe.

                  Cheers - Rob.

Can some one please tell me the difference between 30's 50's 60' and 90's? What do the numbers actually mean?

30 - 0.30 cu inch motor (american measure) heli runs 550mm blades
50 - runs 600 mm blades (or 620 if it is a raptor titan)
                      60/90 runs 700/720 blades.
                      0.60 cu inch is 10cc.

30s = beginners heli, goes well in the right set-up, and is good for learning.
50s = intermediate heli, often the same size as a 30, but with loads more oooomph and go. Very affordable and ballistic performance.
                        60s = don't really exist much anymore because they = 50s.
90s = ultimate machines. Major (even more than ballistic) performance, but also major running costs and serious repair bills. Only go here if you've got very long arms for dipping into very deep pockets!
