Hi. I'm a self taught pilot as well. I started off 2 years ago with phoenix sim and tx. Then I got a mcx then an msr. It was only when I was confident on all 3 that I took the plunge and bought a flasher 500 (trex 500 clone).

In about a month I have gone from newb build (with all the usual setup questions and problems) to the first nervous hovers with training gear, training gear off, all orientation hovering (right way u, not inverted yet!) to fast forward flight, circuits, figure 8's. In that time I have only had one "proper crash" as the other was caused by some kind of radio lockout.

Hope this gives you some confidence that you an do it by yourself as long as you take your time and heed advice.

As for first big heli, I have been well pleased with my 500 as she is quite big and stable - not to mention easy to fix! I have not flown the others but I am taking delivery of a trex 250 and 450 pro later this week so hope to report back soon

Btw, Phoenix is a good choice and very sensible starting point
        Hi Graham,
I do hang around there a lot during the summer, so yes you've got yourself one more buddy this summer.

        Many thanks for the offer.

Pretty much how I did it- self taught- it can work- the Heli in there that made me progress was the Thunder Tiger Innovator- superb first CP heli, but not a budget step as you cannot use the Tx etc for other models and the batteries are specific to the model! The mSR is good and even that is tricky to start with, but it does bounce pretty well.

              Your more than welcome Dave.
PS I agree with Alex re the Innovator. Its a superb first cp heli and it taught me to fly with surprising ease. Problem is its not cheap initially. Having said that, Its the one heli I've never seriously crashed so its actually worked out much cheaper in the long run.

Over all though, you wont go too far wrong with a Trex 450 and the Phoenix simulator.
If your over my way any time pop in for a cuppa and have a go on the sim and my mSR

                  +1 for the Phoenix Sim.
I bought mine this time last year near enough and its helped masses! God only knows how much its saved me in repair costs!
Get it, you will NOT be disappointed and it's brilliant learning material! Just get a good Tx to accompany it, preferably the one that you will be using to fly your bigger heli's with.
I spent months on the Sim (both learning to fly heli's which i was useless at in the beginning and flying the planks (planes), after that I eventually succumbed to buing a Trex 450 from a member on here... Best thing I did!
