i think ive set my heart on a good 450sport one from ebay (im not sure how the SE is any different).
dont mind waiting for the right one to pop along
what kills me is the thought that if a 450 will cost around 300, the 500 was only a tad over £400
driving 1/5 scale petrol cars is so much more straightforward
Try flying the mcpx close, you dont have to fly it at the same distance away you would a 450. As I said I'd go with a Phoenixtech 450 Sport at £215 but you still need a TX, RX, and lipos etc just so you wont get change out of £450 for the lot really.

thanks, you say fly it close. but man, the thing got away so fast without much stick movements, perhaps some practice is required

Adjust the distance the mcpx got away from you based on the size of a 450 ( as I say the mcpx flys very much like a 450 on a smaller scale for hovering etc ) and you can imagine how much room a 450 would need.

im having thoughts about the trex 450Pro, is this a bad choice for a beginner?
and how about FBL for beginners? is this not recommended?
ive seen a couple of used ones that are fbl, not sure if these would be ok.

on a side note, been practicing on my mcp x in the garden, getting better on this, so definitely becoming more confident

I don't think a Pro is that bad a choice, but it's not the one people normally recommend. The sport has a belt drive tail which apparently is more forgiving when you clip the tail blades on the ground.

I went against conventional wisdom and went for the TT360, which has a tube drive tail just like the 450 pro. You will clip the tail when you start, I know I did 3 times hard enough to damage gears needing replacement, and I had bigger training gear than normal. I look now at starting in a different way to a lot of people, I don't think it's really a problem starting with a tube drive. I was advised to begin with that as long as I didn't mind mechanically dealing with gears I'd have no problems. I haven't been worried by clipping the tail, I knew it would happen and have a big bag of spare gears. But I think the fact that I have to go home to replace the gears actually helped me personally. A, I've normally done something stupid because I've lost concentration, I need the time out to think about what I did wrong and learn from it. And B, it's forced me to be more careful. I've done just as much practice at landing smoothly as I've done hovering since I started. And now I don't need the training gear as I can take off and land with confidence.

FBL however, I'm really not interested in personally, and I think it might be a bad choice for learning. Mainly because FBL is more difficult to set up if you have no clue what you're doing, but also from what I can see unless set up not to be they are easier to fly. I learnt to drive in a manual car so I could drive both. I'm learning on a FB heli so I can fly both

All my opinions, I'm sure others will disagree.

My advice is to go belt drive with the SE V2. All the newbys in our club have been through tail gear after tail gear just from clipping the ground with the tail rotors.
You can always upgrade at a later date if you feel you need to but I havnt as the belt drive works perfectly.
I have torque tube on my 500 and I can't notice the difference at my level.
Bottom line is, whatever t Rex 450 you buy you'll like.
I set up a mini Titan 450 SE and flew that the other day. Was a nice heli. Not quite the same quality as the t Rex but not a million miles away.
