  • Yay! Got my training gear off today

Ran 6 packs in the back garden this morning, practicing orientation, smooth takeoffs, smooth landings - all in quite a stiff breeze.

After reading various posts about becoming dependent on training gear, i decided today was the day to lose it as I want to progress as quickly as possible and not be held back by the "stabilisers".

Spooled her up several times before I had the courage to go for it.

When I did, she lifted off beautifully, under complete control, despite the wind. Hovered her for 2 packs, practicing different side & tail orientations. Practiced a few landings, making sure everything was as smooth and slow as possible.

What a rush! I think my blood must have been brown after the fist hover - even more of a rush compared to the first ever hover with training gear on. Now even more hooked than ever.

Gone from complete newb 3 weeks or so ago, through first hover with gear, first crash, first rebuild and now confidently moving around the garden without training aids. Feeling rather pleased with myself!

Nice one, I'm still building up to taking the training gear off, not there yet as my landings are still way too hard.

          Circuits next then?

congrats mate, there's loads of us on here who are not far ahead of you. To be honest, after I took the training undercarriage off, I actually found things easier, maybe you've found the same?

Well played anyway, it's a great rush eh?

I took my training gear off a few weeks ago as I'm pretty confident hovering tail in and side on. Now I'm ready to start moving the heli round a bit and get it coming towards me I'm considering putting back on just until I get my confidence.

Its sure better without the training gear aint it

The bummer for me is I bought training gear for the 500 which hasnt flown yet and I don't need it on the 450

This is a good point about flying with no training gear. When I first started I had a Silverlit Vortex 3-channel and had training gear on that and it did save a few crashes until I got better. Then I took the training gear off and it seemed so much easier to fly. When I finally get round to taking the stuff off my Blade 400 can I expect everything to actually to work better or is it just an illusion? I can't see that training gear should have anything more than a neglible effect on handling (when only practicing hovering) but when it's not there things do seem different.

Nice one fella, always good to get the chicken legs off as it makes the Heli alot more stable.

You are progressing much too fast, I can't find a green smilie. Well done. Keep checking it over for bits falling off and wearing out. Always good to have a stock of main shafts and feathering shafts. Seems to stop things breaking if you have a spare.

I think the only thing I missed when I took the undercarriage off for the first time was the fact that I had (unknowingly) been using it to aid orientation. A set of white and orange ping pong balls on wide legs is a very easy thing to fixate on. Again, you'll soon drop this and concentrate on what the heli is doing/about to do.

I'm not really that much past you in experience terms, but you'll find that you'll progress quite quickly so long as you keep some SIm time going when you are not flying for real.

It's not that long ago I took mine off, I'll try to find my youtube vid's when I had my undercarriage on (edit: Here you go...6 months ago). I did my first loops a couple of weekends ago

Took her down the field for the first time today. It was very windy, and for a few minutes I was unsure whether I would take the risk. In the end, I thought sod it, if I crash, I crash. I figured it would be good practice to learn to fly in the wind.

I managed 2 and a bit packs, and quit half way through the 3rd when the wind got really out of hand.

During this time I managed lots of side on, tail in orientations. I could not quite bring myself to nose in, although I feel I am ready for that.

Maybe tomorrow - determined to start circuits very soon. Just hope the wind is a little less.

Nice one. I've had my training gear off for a while now whilst doing tail in manoeuvres and hovering side on.
I put it back on when I started flying side to side and turning just for confidence but have taken it off again now.
I wouldn't bother with nose in hover as you will just crash and it's not necessary at the moment. Start turning the heli side on and moving it forwards. Then turn it the other way and move it forwards. Before long you'll be flying side to side slowly and turning on the rudder. Then you're actually flying.
Try not to get the heli nose in to you into you can do that. If it gets out of control just get that tail round and back into a hover to save yourself.
                              Good luck.
