    Hi all

First post here so I'll start with an introduction...

About 15 years ago I got into fixed wing radio control and with the help of my local model shop (in SE London) and local flying club I built a high wing aerobatic capable trainer, if that isn't a contradiction in terms. It was a Moronic if anyone remembers them. At the time I had an Atari ST and bought an RC aerochopper to learn and practice on. It served me very well and during a flying lesson I managed to land it on my first flight. (The model had been checked out by the model shop and instructor first).

Recently I noticed how cheap RTF electic helicopters had become and, with a little prompting , my wife bought me a coaxial type for my birthday. Now, although I'm still amazed at how well this thing flies for the cost, it has some severe failings in terms of range/servo glitching and outdoor performance is very limited (the blades touch easily). I've had to buy alot of spares as the result of the range issue and blade touching crashes. So I have decided that the only thing that this model is good for is for fun flying in the garden (when it's very calm!) and to help me learn nose in flying. (I know I could use my old ST and Aerochopper but the last time I tried to use it, it didn't work).

Although my garden isn't huge it is certainly big enough for me to learn hovering with whatever I get as the next step, so an electric collective pitch model would seem to suit. I like the idea of practising to becoming reasonably competent at home (something you can't do with fixed wing) but would obviously join a club if I got good enough to fly circuits and to try 3d flying. From reading around, the mini-pred seems to be the RTF collective pitch model of choice and so I very nearly bought one yesterday at a local model shop but I didn't partially because of what I've read here .

I think I've decided that if I do take the next step, it will be much more cost effective/satisfying to build a kit. That way I learn how it all works, how to repair/maintain it and how to change it to suit my skill level as I improve (hopefully!!).

I like the look of the Dragonus model, particularly as it has an adjustable head ratio. I gather it is prone to interference from internal EMF so decided that a 2.4 GHz TX/RX would be the best radio gear to go with the model. As I'm starting from scratch it would make sense.

I think I meet the minimum PC specifications of Phoenix and have seen that it is compatible with the Futaba 2.4 GHz TX (DX6 and DX6EX) compatible with Phoenix so I would use that to supplement my garden practise.

Could I use my coaxial TX with Phoenix? It is an Easy Copter Expert V2, (think its a Walkera 5#4 clone so a Walkera tranny) which has a small output on the back about the size of a keyboard/mouse PS2 socket. If so where can I get a cable?

Can anyone recommend a heli supplier/shop in the Romsey/Southampton/Salisbury area? I've not been impressed with the ones I've visited so far but then I am comparing them to the support I got when I build my Moronic and I'm sure the market has changed. Maybe it's me (PM me if it needs that). Are there any other clubs in the area that might be closer than the ones at Middle Wallop and Martin Down?

Does all the above sound like a reasonable approach if I decide to take the next step?

Any comments and suggestions will be most welcome.

    Cheers

      hi,

sounds like your having fun and need to take the next step.

however... the next step isnt a mini-pred. i have experience of them and they are really not much fun (it took a lot of will power to be that nice about them)

there really is only one micro CP heli to own these days and thats the trex450 se V2. However by the time you have bought all the gear to go in them your looking at close to nitro heli money to get them going.

you have one of the best heli clubs in the country about 30mins drive from salisbury near wimborne too which is also where i fly and the field features in phoenix sim. most clubs are mainly fixed wing and helis are at best tollerated. dorset model helicopter club is a heli club (well duh!) but we also fly fixed wing and as such there are a lot more people around to help out.

as for shops, i used to live in southampton so know the area well. Spire models in laverstock is a good shop unless your looking at helis hes more of a glider man and only really dabbles in helis mainly planes and trains in eastleigh is perticularly useless for helis and im not even going to comment on hobby stores as it will likely make my blood boil!

personally i would make the trip down to ferndown just outside bournemouth to mr models. (www.mrmodels.co.uk)

im not sure your contra tx will work with phoenix. i know some of the walkera stuff use their own version of pcm which isnt supported by any simulator.

my suggestion for you is to get phoenix and a nitro heli and make the trip to wimborne. later on once you have some more experience then get a trex 450 se v2 when the budget and skills allow as they are a little trickier to fly than the larger models.

take a look at the knight 50 sport cheap and very capable straight out the box, easy to fly easy to setup and require no upgrades as your skills improve you will grow into it rather than out of it.

Id agree with Ade there is only one choice of micro heli the Trex 450 se V2
not just because its all blinged up but because its the only micro heli on the market that will handle like a larger model,
For the same money you could go ic which in your case might be a good idea seeing as your close to such a good club,
Might be best to nip down there a few times and then decide what ya wanna do

Thanks all for those replies, I hadn't found MrModels so I will pop along there soon. In fact I'm test riding a motorbike at Three Legged Cross next weekend (weather permitting so may pop along after that).
Ade - I agree with your assessment of local stores.

I understand the recommendations to go nitro and I don't have anything against nitro but I really want a model I can practise with at home and electric is the only option. But I will pop down and say hello at the Wimborne site before committing to anything (except maybe a TX/Phoenix deal, which seem quite reasonable and which are easy to sell on if I decide not to take the next step).

I'm surprised that the T-Rex SE v2 comes out as the best option, I thought it would be close between the T-Rex, the Dragonus Elite Pro and the TT Mini Titan E325. And as I said in my OP, the Elite has the adjustable head making it a nice starter bird (or so I thought).

          Cheers all

Got to be the 450 se v2, your going to bin it at some point and the Trex will take it and be cheap to repair and the most of the parts are of the shelf so limited down time, more fly time. Right now its the trex over anything at this size.

            Thumbs up to the 2.4
