  • time to give up already?!

I think i may of saved myself £££ buy buying steves Pheonix sim and FF7... instead of buying a whole lot of brand new kit and giving up later!

I decided last night i could control the heli better in mode1, so after taking delivery of the FF7 i switched it to mode1 again and had another go on the trainer, but im going backwards and cant keep a still hover, or even bring it back to a hover when built up speed.

Ive tried looking at the TX box on the demo flights, and it hasnt helped :S

How long should i give it before i decide enough is enough? i was going to try to get some lessons in, but im guessing theres only so much u can teach, and if i cant hover how can i be taught?

    Help!

              Is someone teaching you?

I mean really taking you through the logical steps of learning to fly?

If you do it according to a plan, the you shouldn't go worng. The problem comes when you don't have a plan, so you inevitably don't know what to do next or when it's time to move up to the next step, and of course you tend to try and run before you can walk.

Not being able to hold a steady hover is a common one. It's a bit like hitting a golf ball up a driving range. You might consider a good shot to be the on ethat goes the furthest, but if you're 50 yards off target to the left or right, then it's not really a very useful shot is it?

It's the same with hovering a heli - you need something to aim for. Make yourself three bits of flat plywood about 100mm square. Stick one on the ground about 5 yards in front of yourself and try and sustain a hover right over it.

When you've mastered that, put a second square 10 yards to the right of the first one, and the third sqaure 10 yards to the left of the first one. Then try hovering over the middle one (right in front of you), and then moving the heli over to the left and hovering over that one. Then come back to the middle and hover. Then go over to the right and hover. Then come back to the middle and hover etc etc etc. Do all this tail-in.

The next step is to take off from the middle, hover, float over to the left, hover and land over that square. Then pick it up again, hover, float back to the middle, hover and land. Then do the same to the right.

This is a very important early stage of learning, as it gets you used to looking at the heli, and being in control on both your left hand side, and your right hand side.

The next step is............. Nah, that's enough for now.

thats all well and good, but i cant hover let alone land and move around! i can land an auto on the training target 2 outta 10 times, i can pop 1 balloon! i can fly forwards backwards and somtimes upside down, i can work the correct orientation most the time, but i still cant hover steady:S dont have a heli yet but was planning to buy a raptor 50 from steve and have lessons when the time comes

So yoo're doing all this on the sim?

                  No wonder.

Get a heli and do it for real - it's a lot easier.

Inferno i have seen you fly on the sim, dont worry you will learn, maybe mode 1 is easier for you, but most people use mode 2, in mode 2 the right stick controls the way you tilt the heli, that way you "just" have to stear oposit of what the heli does.

I trainned for some time to, and i still dont hover perfectly, especialy if i take the smaller heli like trex450.

One thing to look forward to is the next phoenix sim patch, if the training part for online playing shows up, then it will be easier for the rest of us to support and guide you, and im sure most people will help you, thats how my tic toc when from crash to semi controlled :O

allso phoenix have a great hovering training, use it, start with that and make it a little harder when you learn the first step.

last, hovering is one of the hardest things to learn when you start out, the heli will wander around, but just keep it from crashing

I find i can get a lovely stable hover for about 30secs and then relax next thing the heli is off on its own and have to drag it back.
Dont suffer with this on pheonix as im more relaxed all the time but it does get easier as everyone has said don't give up if youre enjoying the challenge though.

                      AND IT IS A CHALLENGE.

A good teacher should be able to get you hovering nice and steady in not much time at all.
Regular, small corrective inputs, and seeing what the heli is doing and reacting quickly to it (constantly) is a good statring point.

Plenty of practice and you'll get there!
                        Cheers,
