  • Battery problem

    Hi:

    I don't know if I post my question under correct forum. But here is my problem:

    I have a 6S 5000mAh WinForce Li-Po battery which is come with one of second hand heli I have bought while ago. I have just try charge it today, I have selected 6s on my balance charger, but my charger tell me only 5s has been detected (I am sure the charger is in fine working condition as I have test with my other batteries). Is this mean my battery is dead or one of cell is dead? Can I still use this battery?

    It could be that one of the leads to a cell has come off, unwrap the batt from it's packaging and check all the wires.

      could be a broken balance lead also, can you check the voltage from the battery as it is with a voltmeter?

        If I do what you suggested, would still able to put everything back to one piece?

          I have checked the voltage through my balancer charger, every cells seems normal, is this means that I have a broken balance lead? if so, how do I change it (if I am able to )?

            The charger is telling you that something is wrong and that you shouldn't use the battery. You need to look at it in more detail.

            Edit: I just thought that one of the pins in the JST connector may have been pushed back. It may just need to be pushed in. If the plastic finger doesn't hold it in position the you need a new jst connector, or glue.

            You need to measure the individual cell voltages and the overall voltage of the battery and post them. You need to use something other than your charger. I use a £5 led thing that plugs into the balance lead and gives each cells voltage. I use this everytime before I fly as I have mixed up flat and charged batteries before. A cheap voltmeter is ok, if you have steady hands and put the probes on the balance connector metal bits. Make sure the metal probes don't touch as this will short out the cell. You'll know if it happens. Tell nus what your charger is as well.

            If one of the cell wires then as someone said you can take the covering off, resolder, a new wire, and recover. The pads are very close together and when you short them out with a soldering iron, there is a big flash. You have to be careful taking the covering off as anything metal could cause a short.

            Depending on the cell volts you could just charge unbalanced. You will have to make sure that no cell goes over 4.2V. If your charger allows you to limit the charge time or the capacity then you could use this to limit your initial charge to say 4.1V. If you have more than .1V of unbalance at max charge then the cell is probably on its way out. You could still use it so long as you keep the weakest cell above 3.2V on load.

            One other option would be to convert it to a 5S pack, or get somebody to do it for you.
