  • Rubbish pilot ,I cant even hover.

    Hi Guys

Iam really frustrated.I have been lurking around the forums for a while and thought I would join up.I dont have much spare cash (2 kids to feed) but I saved up for a esky Honeybee V2 fixed pitch to try my hand with (dont laugh, all i could afford). Since buying it,all i seem to do is crash and break parts.I have broken 4 of the rotor heads 1 tail fin and 1 centre hub.I really like the attitude of people in this hobby, all seem very freindly but I just dont seem to be able to even get close to hovering my cheap craft and therefore I feel like it might be time to give up.Any ideas why iam so terrible?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Don't beat yourself up too much. We all pranged our early flights a lot. Get a sim and learn that way. There are cheap options like HelisimRC to download, before purchasing something like Phoenix. It will teach you the basics, FREE!!!!!!!!!!

    HeliSimRC

Then, set your heli up properly. Go to Helifreak and watch the setup videos by Finless Bob White et al.

Heli Skills and Setup 101 - LOOK here first! - HeliFreak

But persevere, and you will pick up lots of good stuff.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Don't despair, we all had to start at the beginning. You may be better off saving for a Phoenix flight sim and get as much time on that as possible. At least when you crash, you can just start again at no cost! One thing you can do is to learn 1 axis at a time, the computer holds all the others, and you can build up the number of controls you have.

All the best, and don't give up just yet

        Dont get too disheartened mate...

Its a long hard learning curve and it dont happen overnight!.. Ask anyone on here and they will all tell you to buy a sim.. Phoenix is a prefered one to use.. that £79.99 will save you hundreds or thousands for some people in crash costs!!

If it was easy then people wouldn't fly planks.

Hats off to you for trying mate, you just got to stick at it and believe me you will crack it soon.

+1 on Mike's comments, simulators are a real help and taking a look at the Finless Bob vids will help you understanding a lot.

Keep at it mate, this is a really rewarding hobby, and the first time you get to hover your heli, you will whoop for joy and the feeling will stay with you for ever

          Good luck,
          Simon

U think ur bad u haven't seen me trying to hover my MSR...that thing is wild and uncontrollable (a bit like me some say) so I'm looking at a coaxial at t mo and leaving off the mad heli until I get used to it. It ain't easy trying to fly and I don't have the time for a sim. I barely have time once every 2 weeks to hover due to uni and work. I empathise with u completely but keep trying
Gone out of my mind...back in 10mins

I should not let my mind wander...it is too small and fragile to be let out by itself

              Thanks guys

I have clearview and fms simulators but I keep tring and failing with "the real thing" lol.Its just tring to find the time with work and kids.I think I need to do 2 things.Firstly I need to get more spares in,maybe 10 0f each of the parts I keep breaking and also get a bigger area to practise.Secondly I need more light as its dark when i get home, lol. I agree with the sim commets.I will get pheonix very soon. Thanks again guys.

I've been at this 6-7 weeks. OK I have a little more cash, ...well I had things I could sell on eBay. I started on the mCX, great fun and crashed no end. Now I crash beacuse I push it to hard! I then grabbed the mSR. It was wild until I hooked it up to my new DX8, made a whole load of difference (DX6i would probably work the same). I don't really fly the mCX's now (yes, I have 3), I fly the mSR all the time.

Pheonix is the way to go. I've just managed tonight some +5 minute flights without crashing.

Like the rest say, stick at it and don't give up!

Just a note: You can pick up real bargins on here. Keep your eye on the sales thread. I'll probably get rid of 2 of my mCX's in the next few weeks so if you can save some pennies and want one maybe we can do a deal.

get yourself an msr. it wont break all the time, just somtimes after a lot of abuse. get loads of battteries from hobbycity and pick it up and fly it every day in the largest room in the house. you will get it if you stick at it. fix it with tape, supergue and cotton, and epoxy putty if you dont want to buy spares when you do break it. you wont get anywhere near as bored as you will with a sim. learn your orientation with it. two months and you should be happy, when you can do it, fly the honeybee

Tbh clearview is my weapon of choice cos it was cheap...it will learn you to nose in and get used to the controller you will fly with....I'm in exactly same boat but had a long lay off...last 2 months ive been rebuilding...couldn't afford it all in one go....my feeling at mo is also to get a cheap indoor thing ...
Try and use difficult settings with wind and the raptor90 or 700 on clearview...its the set up of tx I'm worrying about...the vids mentioned will help me I think...

                      yip agree here.
i have clearview also. a great sim (not quite as good graphically as phoenix) hence that's why i run it as my pc couldn't hack phoenix.
imo phoenix cant teach you any thing else that clearview already can.
so while i agree with everything else sim time etc etc and of course helifreak etc but you may as well save you money on the sim and put it towards spares/or a new heli and stick with clearview
                      cheers

                          Hi Newboy
As everyone says get a copy of Pheonix I am a beginner the same as you I bought a DX6i and then Pheonix costs nothing when you crash!
TomW is selling a copy on here I notice £65 and you use the TX you intend to use on the real thing. I am still flying my cheap little micro around the house. I bought a Trex 450 Sport off fleabay at a good price fitted with Alien Command and 4 Lipo's, case, spares etc. I have not even tried to fly it yet keep practising on Pheonix. Have a look at Chopper Addicts web site he has a easy to make training aid which I may try when I start.

Not laughing at all, closer to crying really as I wish there was some way to stop people buying that particular heli as a starting point.

I got one when I first started and it nearly finished me as well. The good news though is that it is not you, it really is the heli that is the problem.

I know some people do manage to learn on that thing but it really is not the easiest or cheapest way to get started once you add in all the spares you will use and factor in that every time you crash there is a good chance you may not get it back together perfectly either.

Something like an mCX or an mSR would have been a much better place to start.
