  • Surgical versus White Spirit

So ... I went out to get some white spirit, with a view to using this to clean screws, etc before using threadlock for my Trex 500e assembly. Ended up coming home with Boots Surgical Spirit BP instead, on the assumption that this was pretty much the same stuff and only Boots was open on a Sunday!

Courtesy of Google, it seems like this might have some olive oil in it, which I guess might create some sort of residue that could interfere with threadlock.

Can anyone categorically confirm that they've successfully used surgical spirit to clean screws of engineering oil, etc with no subsequent issues with threadlock?

    Many thanks.

Surgical spirit and white spirit will leave a residue, what you need is isopropyl alcohol, also available at chemists

nail polish remover also contains an oil to make the ladies skin nice! acetone (its base ) will work fine but is a tad harsh on the fingers

If your cleaning steel bolts to put into steel nuts/threads then there is no issue with meths.

Not sure what thread-lock you are using, but Loctite 243 (Blue removable) is listed as oil tolerant.

Might help if that is what you have

                        Snip:
Medium strength Loctite 243 and high strength Loctite 270 are now more oil tolerant than ever before, enabling them to be used more readily on ‘as received’ parts – including those contaminated with engine oils, corrosion prevention oils and cutting fluids. Their temperature resistance has also been increased to 180°C. In addition, the adhesives will cure not only on active substrates, such as iron, copper, brass and steel, but also on passive materials including stainless steel, zinc plated surfaces, inorganic and organic coating
