  • I'm scared of it...

    Hi Guys

I took the shuttle out to the back yard today to finish setting it up after repairing it ( short story, I hit the heli's tail on the ground) and carrying out preventative maintenance. After I had it nicely setup I did a bit of hovering, and although I enjoyed it I felt more scared of damaging the heli than I ever have.

My usual flying pad is a bit of plyboard in the middle of my mucky, reed strewn excuse for a garden. I didn't think this was a suitable place today as the ground is completely water logged after the snow and the plyboard is extremely slippery so I flew from my gravel/hardcore drive. I was constantly aware of the parked cars behind me and the windows of my house, and the fact that the little shuttles tail is about an inch off the uneven stones when set down so after a tank I packed up and came inside.

I'm really not happy as I haven't been able to get out to fly for at least 6 weeks due to the damaged parts and the snow. I suppose looking on the bright side I haven't damaged anything today and we've turned the corner heading for summer. I'm looking forward to my first full summer as a heli flyer!

    thanks for readin'

Join up to a club. I would have sacked off helis a long time ago if it wasnt for the people I have met.

You will also have more space, and more confidence due to the experienced people around you.

Failing that, buy something bigger and even more expensive, You wont be scared of flying the Shuttle then

Learning to fly a nitro in your garden/on your drive... are you insane?
Try going to a proper flying field mate. Nothing to worry about hitting there!

don't get too disheartened mate. It's just something you learn to put to the back of your mind when flying. I haven't been for a fly for about 2 weeks now and i'm getting withdrawal!!! .
I've just ordered phoenix sim so hopefully that should keep my fingers happy for the winter and keep me in the swing of things.

Never such a great idea to fly a heli in confined spaces, you need a "bail-out" area for when it goes wrong. It was the main reason I joined a club. More room, like-minded folk, more enjoyable. Roll on spring....

Normally I have plenty of space, its just that the ground is too water logged to walk out to it. I always fly away from the house as well although you are right in what you are saying. I'm going to join a club in the new year. My old club is a little far from me now. Oh and I have a Sceadu (more expensive and bigger) but there's not a chance its coming out untill I'm proficient. I only bought it cause it was a good deal.!!

you will find the sceadu spares are cheaper than the shuutle ones
if the sceadu is a 30 the blades will cost the same if its a 50 they will cost a little more

Just to quell any doubts about flying in my back garden:

Its quite good as long as I stay out in the reeds, the last few days its been too mucky but I got out today. I always start the heli's on the pallet in the forground and then carry them out to the 3*3 ply board about 15m up and to the right on the picture.
I'm in the middle of preparing the Sceadu for initial testing. I'll strap it down and give it a run up now shortly after moving the car and see what happens.

Oh jeez, you have miles of space.

Can completely associate with what you are saying about being scared to fly again after a repair. I had that with my 450 some time ago, and did indeed pack it in for about a year. Then for no particular reason, decided to pick it up again and now I'm on the sticks as often as I possibly can.

It'll just take a few flights to get some confidence back, but it will just start to "click" one day...just keep taking it steady and just take small steps as your confidence increases, otherwise you might end up further back than you started
