  • Newbie to rc helis

Hi all, just thought id write a quick message sayin im new to the forum, and i look forward to all future threads.

I took a keen interest in flying RC heli's a few years back and got a Raptor 30 as a starter unfortunately, i was abit to keen. No training aids, no proper setup, no simulator. It doesnt take much to put two and two together, so after the crash i fixed and sold the thing. So now im keen to restart the hobby, i still have my radio and starter etc which is a bonus. So i am wondering what i should get as a new heli, im very drawn to raptor titan se, as i would like something in the mid-range that i can have tamed down for my beginner day and would suit me well as i "hopefully" advance through the hobby. Whats everyones views on this i do hear alot of people are working with electric helis but they dont work for me very well as where i will be flyin is very primitive and it would easier just too bring a drum of fuel than have too keep recharging several batteries.

    Many Thanks

    Liam

    hi liam,
welcome to the forum, getting phoenix sim will help you loads and a raptor will be cheap on parts when you crash it and they fly nice too.
Also find a club near you and go and have a talk to the guys and they will help you with your setup
    cheers

well i one step ahead there just ordered the simulator last night, i have a old sanwa rd6000 do you think this is a reasonable sort of transmitter. Problem with the club though, i live the shetland islands so there isnt much of that sort of thing happening here.

Hi Liam welcome to the forum you might want to consider a trex600n as the parts are cheaper than most and probably the easiest to get, Not that there is anything wrong with a raptor I had a couple and was very pleased with them

                  Hi Liam,

If your looking for a mid sized nitro heli, or .50 size heli's as most people know them you have a few to choose from. Probably the two most popular nitro heli's for beginners are The Raptor 50 and Trex 600. Thunder Tiger have recently released their new .50 to replace the raptor titan, the Titan X50. Here's a link if your interested in checking it out. Fast Lad Performance

The Trex 600 is very popular due to being relatively cheap compared to some of its competitors, especially in combo form. Spare parts are also well priced and widely available at most model shops. There is also the ElyQ Vision 50, Outrage Velocity 50, Fury 55, VIbe 50 and Synergy N5 in the .50 size range.

Personally if I was starting out now i'd buy myself a good 7 channel transmitter, probably either Spektrum DX7 or Futaba 7C and a Trex 600 limited edition combo.

Its definately worth getting a good few hours in on the sim getting your basic tail in and side on orientations sorted before flying for real as it will boost your confidence for those all important first few flights

Also, this hobby is wildly addictive. I hope your wallet is ready for a bashing!

Thanks for the kind welcoming, i got my simulator so had that fired up today. Seem to be gettin to grips with it "ish" , but i cant seem to help the helicopter getting away from me. I can keep it within say 5m diamter but the movement increases more and more untill the helicopter is harder to keep still, Any pointers? I think the purchase of the acutal heli will only be nearer next summer as the weather is pretty crap up this way most of the year.

                          Welcome Liam

Sell the RD6000 and get a Spektrum. I did just that and bought a DX7, which is so much more responsive. There was a dead area in the centre of the Sanwa and much slower responses too, making it harder to control the helicopter

You'll notice an immediate improvement on the sim and in real life
