  • First Heli ?

Hi ... looking to build my first Heli.
I stress build, as I do not want an artf, building it up is part of the attraction.

After Googling around seems that my direction will be a 50 sized nitro m/c, and my main aim is at the Raptor Titan 50 SE.
Reading some posts here - the +ve seem to still hold, rugged, hovers well, good all round machine for a learner. May not be the best 3D option, but that is not what I am after.
The negatives - seem to have been addressed by the increased metal parts in the SE kit and design improvements ... price also seems fairer.

I am currently buying a Spektrum DX7 and will get simulator to learn.

Would welcome tips & comments about the Raptor,
Some people will always find fault - if you find a typo, consider it put there for you.

Really good choice Imo softer responce than a T rex and a belt tail (better if you catch the ground )

Nothing wrong with the Rappy 30 either.

Welcome in enjoy the oppinions & banter

Nothing wrong with a Raptor Titan as a 1st helicopter

they do hold together well although the design is now dated.

Find a local club though and go see what they fly is also worth doing

welcome dude, don't discount the vision .50, low parts count and a low kit price with some nice carbon fiber bits

I did find the local club listed ... unfortunately it does not list any contact details. (have asked BMFA, await reply)
I Googled around and it says they meet at 1100 on Sundays ... been to location twice and no one there. Maybe club is no more.

Oh and a small cheap heli to build your skill level on before you try new things with a screaming nitro beast would be a good idea, they can be quite daunting when you spool them for the first time over a meter or blades spinning at 2000 rpm and all the smoke and noise , personally i love it
            Cheers Al

              +1 on that.

Nothing wrong with starting with a nitro, But consider where you will fly it.

if you have a garden, You will progress a little quicker maybe if you have a 450 to bash about as well.

                -1000,00000,00000

Naa skip the small electric twitchy stuff the nitros better more stable

and they don't have to scream at 2000rpm either if set up right

                  Hi Sargan, and welcome
The TT Raptor 50se is a good solid choice for a beginner. 50 size helis are inherently more stable in the hover than smaller 450 size etc so much less of a handful to learn on so long as the set-up is good. Join a local club and get a kind member (there are usualy plenty of them ) to thoroughly check and trim the heli for you before you attempt to fly it yourself and if you can buddy box your DSX7 with an experienced pilot then even better!!
While 450 size helis are cheaper to repair, they are much twitchier in the hover but if you like spending your time rebuilding helis then there's nothing wrong with a 450

To future proof yourself a bit, take a look at the new TT Raptor X50 which will give you more 3D potential when you eventualy reach that stage..............

Is 2nd hand a risk for beginner, with no idea of Hrs it has run, and Hrs means wear on engine, linkages, control levers etc.

Not really any higher risk for a beginner than anyone else, but if you want to build it yourself then it would probably be nicer to build from new (as opposed to strip and rebuild a 2nd hand one).

You should join a club though, if you hven't already. The help you will get is invaluable, especially the final setup stages. I certainly needed it, the first heli I built nearly fell to bits on its first spool up.
Life's a bitch and then you fly!!
