  • Futaba 6EX 6-Channel 2.4GHz

Hi, following on from another thread where i was asking which heli to move on to (from Esky Lama V3) we narrowed it down to Dragonus or T-rex as i want to stick to electric and smaller scale.

I think i will buy a sim and transmitter first so would the Futaba 6EX 6-Channel 2.4GHz be a good choice? Any reason to avoid this?

I don't really see myself moving into the larger nitro models but who knows. Also and this is probably a stupid question, would there be anything stopping me from using a 2.4g transmitter to control surface vehicles (i fancy a tamiya f-350 highlift and all my surface transmitters are two channel)

    Thanks in advance!

now for a useful post :-)

the 6exh is a very basic radio with pretty limited and difficult to navigate software.

If your not going to be flying at a club then 2.4gig is the only way to go. at the moment this limits you to the Spektrum DX7. this will stop you shooting down another model that could be flying nearby without you knowing. You can use 2.4gig for surface. The reason for the split on FM is to stop cars from interfering with planes and vice versa.

      for a sim... obviously phoenix.

definitely JR or Spectrum for a transmitter

The Dx7 is a good choice for a stand alone transmitter, but if you can afford it maybe a PCM 9x2 with a spectrum module, but that comes to about £400, so not the cheapest choice on the planet!

I bought the Futaba T6EXHP October last year and I am already seriously thinking of upgrading to the new Futaba 2.4 but minimum seven channel tho.
Ok i can fly with this set and I am still having lessons but have come to realise that this radio isnt going to be good enough for my long term plan.

So to nick a quote from Ade "Buy once and buy right"

for small electrics there is a lot of RF noise from the poiwer train and all the moving parts which can interfere with 35Mhz, so you are best going for 2.4Ghz.

You actually asked about the new Futaba 6ex tx which is the first 2.4Ghz system that futaba have launched.
So far I think the Spectrun is the only 2.4Ghz with type approval in the UK. The futaba will probably get that soon, and this 6ch system was only launched at a recent toy fair in germany I think. I didn't think it was in the shops yet.

The futaba 2.4Ghz works in a different way to the Spectrum. It won't drive a spectrum 2.4Ghz rx.

JR just launched a 9ch 2.4Ghz system and it is based on the spectrum so you have an upgrade path with JR from the spectrum DX7 to more channels and it will drive the spectrum receivers.

There is another "aftermarket" module system for 2.4Ghz which is designed to plug into existing transmitters. It is made by XPS but is not yet avaiable in the shops.

Back to the 6 ch futaba sytem you asked about.

The previous 35Mhz version of this was the base entry level system and was dedicated to helis (ie it wouldn't do v tail mix, flaps etc for a plane). This 6ch will do helis and planes so the software is different and ight be better.
For a nitro heli you may well want more channels to control a governor or in flight mixture control. With an electric only 6 channels are needed usually, unless you want to do scale stuff or control a camera or something.
Don't know if the Futaba 6ch 2.4 Ghz is "full range" or if it has more than 3 points on the curves.
The DX6 from spectrum is a 6ch system with reduced range, ok for small helis and parkfly - that futaba might be like that.

The safe bet with 2.4Ghz is to go with spectrum as their tie up with JR means you are assured of compatability now. Soon futaba will have a range of 2.4Ghz out but we are still waiting.

Personally I thing XPS have missed the boat and the big manufacturers are going to have their own 2.4Ghz systems out too quickly for their modules to sell. Also with their module system it looks like you still get the latancy delay inherant in 35mhz, channel 1 is transmitted first and the the other channels follow so there is a delay before channel 6 reacts. That latency is minimal with the spectrum system which is where the more connected feel that everyone talks about comes from.

Thanks for that, it helped a lot. The reason i was asking about the Futaba is because i am due to travel to the states soon and i think it is out there from the look of model shops websites (and because i have always been happy with futaba gear in my trucks). Also, i know i should be supporting my local suppliers and I will - there's a lot of gear left to buy here in the UK!

My understanding is that the Futaba is full range but 6ch. Taking on board all the comments I will definitely be aiming at the 7ch spektrum.

you won't regret getting the DX7 really good radio.

                          Hi

                          Thanks Rob:-)

This would be a better option than the 6EX and at least equal to the DX7, both are good options.
