  • Why do I find it easier to hover in idle up?

    Hi all,

I'm using Phoenix sim and Trex 500 and for some reason I find it easier to hover in idle up mode rather than normal. Is this normal?

    TIA
    Daz

yeah totally normal, in idle up you have a much more consistant headspeed. its the same out in the real world too

One would then ask why am I learning in normal and not idle up mode?

normal mode is best when you have first started flying mainly due to the fact that if you panic and close the throttle the engine/motor will slow down or stop. if you do the same thing in idle up the motor won't stop or slow down and the heli will try to push itself into the ground possibly damaging it. if you are past the stage of hopping around and are actually doing lazy 8's and stuff then there will be no harm in using idle up just remember where the throttle hold switch is if it starts going wrong

What do you mean by 'normal mode' and 'idle up mode' ?

As regards headspeed, I can't see why (given the choice) any beginner should choose to have an ungoverned headspeed in 'normal' or any other mode.

Interestingly I find in 'hover practice' in Phoenix inverted is easier, whichever helicopter model you chose, as it seems to drift around less than the same model the right way up. Has anyone else noticed this?
