Well,
There are two mind either start on a .30 size or a .60 size, the norm is a .30 size.
At our club the favoured .30 sized heli's are :-
1. Raptor 30 V2
2. Sceadu 30
3. Caliber 30
Engines:-
OS 32 SX-H
TT 39
Irvine 39
Stay away from MDS engines
Transmitters:-
Futaba FF8 Super (Second Hand), is a good starter or Sanwa RDS6000. If you've money to burn either a Futaba 9C & JR 9X will last you for years as well as the first two, the benefit with the newer versions are extra functions that will give you more fine tuning.
Mufflers:-
Zimmerman
Curtis MP is just out
Hatori
Yusa
Servo's:-
Futaba 3001's
JR 951
Thier is a big debate over PPM or PCM the later offers a fail safe in the event of radio signal loss. It also has been proven to give a strong signal and in turn enhances the power of the servo's, plus greater precision.
Batteries:-
NiCad Tx 700mah +
NiCad Rx 1200mah +
NiMH batteries are now also becoming popular since they've got bigger and better.
I hope this helps, any further questions feel free.Cheers

Hey man Welcome aboard
If you are a complete newby to helis you are better off starting with an electric. the best size for some one at your stage is either a 450 or 500 size heli look at the honey bee king 2, trex 450, trex 500 for some examples.
aslo it would be the best idea to invest in a simulator, the best one avaliable for the moment is pheonix and it allows you to practise all the manovers and basic flight techniques and controls
also a decent transmitter such as a specktrum dx 6 or dx 7 for up most feel to the heli
once again welcome
