Was reading about head speed and read that I would need a tachomater.I'm a total beginner so do I really need one or should I wait till I am able to hver first and then worry about headspeed?

I flew for two years before buying a tach. I did ok without it. If you are flying with wood blades then headspeed is more critical, otherwise just try different settings and run the headspeed that feels right for you. Some people like very high head speeds for the edgy feeling, others like the long flights and softer response a low headspeed can give.
One other thing, calculate your headspeed using one of the many online calculators, and if you fly electric ensure you gear it right. Change that pinion to get it running sweet, don't run 60% throttle to get the headspeed you want.
Now I have a Western Robotics Chinook G2 elite tach and it is truly awesome. I often get asked to lend it's services. If you are serious about this hobby for the long haul then a good optical tach is a sound investment, or something like the eagle tree data logger comes in handy when setting up helicopters and components.
