  • Morning Everybody

    Hi Everyone,

New to the forum, new to RC Heli’s, I broke my virginity yesterday with a maiden flight having waited a week for the wind to drop enough not to hinder or effect my 1st attempts at RC flying, being located on the coast has it’s disadvantages.

Chap in the model shop was right! A 6ch Esky honey bee king is properly NOT the best thing to start with but… Hey-Ho. First impressions? The manual that is mostly in Chinese is very poorly translated and doesn’t really contain too much helpful information, especially with regards to setting up the product. Whilst being very intricate, a majority of the parts do seem on the cheapo side.

So out I went complete with training set, place my heli down on a neatly trimmed metre square patch of lawn. Got it hovering an inch or so above the grass on my first battery, having taken the time the master the controls whilst still on the ground.

Second battery, I was a bit brave (read stupid) and decided to get airborne, only to land 2mins later (well it seemed like 2 mins) faster than I took off, net result: 1 set of main blades + 1 x of skids trashed. Oh well just as well I had the foresight to get some spares hey…

Anyhow, third battery got airborne again (stupid I know) again and a slight panic set in as my heli started to move off away from me, so I cut the throttle and came back down to earth with a bit more force, nett result: 1 x set of blades 1 x set of skids, 1 x vertical tail fin, feathering shaft and a couple of other plastic parts around area where the flybars attach to the centre hub set.

I’m going to replace as many parts with the CNC versions as the OE items seem very brittle, and I’ve ordered an up rated skid set too!

I not about to admit defeat yet, as the all but brief flying time I had, I really enjoyed,

    Great site btw.

Hi, Thanks for the prompt response, I appreciate your advice, but being like a kid in a sweetshop my eyes were drawn the particular heli I ended up buying! Being a complete novice I know little if nothing of what I should look for or indeed what’s good and what’s not in the way of specification.

I have no regrets about my purchase, like I said it’s my 1st heli, and hopefully will serve me well, once I stop learning to crash !!!!!! At the end of the day I paid little more than the cost of a co-axial Lama heli they have in stock in my local model shop in Maldon.

I sure, even positive, I should of sought advice from a forum like this before I went out with a pocket full of cash, but live’n’ learn. At the end of the day, if the bug really kicks in I can always use my current heli as a spare or let my brother in law fly it.

Or, as it is now a conversation piece amongst guests & friends at it’s sat on my kitchen table awaiting parts to rebuild it

Perhaps you can explain briefly for me what I should be looking for spec-wise, I don’t really want to throw money away, but I will persevere with what I have (for now).

      Thanks in advance TF.

No probs, glad you are enjoying the hobby,at the end of the day a heli is a heli so it will do the job and get you going

I have no real experience with this particular model but have heard a lot about it and its far from perfect

The twin co axial rotor helis are very good for starting out, they are normally more durable and eaier going and you can still do a fair bit with them

Apart from those i can only recommend something like a well specced T Rex 450 as an alternative or next step up the ladder but they break as easily as the bigger electric or Nitro ones so are certainly not toys

For serious sticktime a club enviroment and a 30/50 size heli would be the best bet in the long run

It depends how far you want to go with the hobby, but for now what you have will do the job

Hi Three fields,I to have just started in hellys so my advice is only what i found for myself.I bought a sim its the great planes G2,ive spent a lot of time on that,i then bought a twister bell 47,now i know a lot of people are going to say its coaxial its not a real helicopter but ive found this to be a great help,ok these are very stable but i dont care what any body says they wont fly them selves and you do have to control them and the controls are basically the same as any other helly, the one thing i did like about the coaxial was that because they are so stable you get a lot more time to think about what stick inputs you need to be doing which when your learning is good, the only down side to these type of hellys is that you very rarely get to use them outside because the slightest bit of breeze and they are gone, indoors they are fine, in a smaller room you do get a bit of a problem with the wash from the rotors but you can land ,wait 30 seconds and go again. The bigest thing i found with the bell was it gave me confidence to fly,i think the sim even though you do need to practise does get tedious after a while and you cant beat having the real thing there in front of you.I was advised by numerous people that when you are learning to fly collective pitch, bigger is better,i do agree totaly with this, bigger is more stable and definatly less twitchy,so i bought a raptor 30,i had it very well set up and test flown by a club member,i then had a go at hovering it my self and although it was only a short hover i managed to do it,that was until i started shaking that bad with nerves i had to stop and take a break. So in my experiance although its very little i found the sim to be invaluable,i also found that the bell gave me the confidence to fly.Hope this helps TF and never admit defeat, stick at it its a great hobby but soooooooo adictive, good luck,Lyndon.
          What am i getting my self into:rolleyes: .Twister bell 47:D . Raptor 30 v2:D .Trex 450se.Dx7:D .
