  • Maiden Flight

Weather permitting, I shall take my 450 Sport to the softball quad near my apartment on Saturday morning (around midnight UK time) for it's maiden flight.

I have triple checked the swash level, blade pitch, blade balance, Tx settings, ESC settings - I'm going to recheck the gyro and tail settings tomorrow.

I've spun the heli up indoors (yeah I know it's iffy, but I just had to!) and it seems stable with no vibrations.

I've spent hours on Pheonix. I've hovered the 4G6 (well sort of - bit small in the apartment so the margin for error is tight. Chinesejade has been very efficiently supplying spares on a weekly basis!)

Anything else I should be aware of? LiPo's will be charged, Tx will be charged and I will be wired.

The first time that something that I've built flies. OMG...

Range check your tx mate before you start, take things slow, and possible training gear? If you've been using Phoenix with your tx check your batteries,

      Alright,

I Just maidened my 450 sport last night and all went well apart from some bad vibrations near the main gear and rotor shaft Also the C of g was off too (tail heavy) as I had my ESC mounted under the frames as shown in the manual. So this meant it was tail heavy as the gyro,RX,ESC were all more to the rear.

So I have just spent most of today removing the rotor head, main shaft, main gear,ESC etc...I have now chose to mount the ESC on the left hand side of the frames and more towards the front in hope now it won't be as tail heavy.I would also put some type of mark on one of the blades/tracking tape etc....so when you get the heli into a hover you can check the tracking.I used a white board marker and coloured the end of one of the rotor blades blue,It rubs straight off after you have checked the tracking.

Hope all goes well for you on your maiden hover with the 450 sport.

      Cheers Grant.

dont forget your pre flight check and that the tx has bind'd with the rx silly but will catch you out if not done.

You must be out in the quad, either smiling gloriously or wondering "how could that have happened?" From the bottom of my heart mate, I'm hoping its the former and that you're having a blast with that 450! Hope all is well!

              Cheers mate,

Nah Jason, I'm sat at my desk at work - tomorrow is the big day! Thanks for the advice everyone: I will do a more considered response later.

The only thanks I've put up so far is for Mr Drew. That really was a LOL moment, thank you! Just don't try to visualise it.

Ok, so this weekend hasn't quite gone to plan!

Rain stopped play on both mornings so I will have to wait until next week Well it is rainy season here.

More Nine Eagles and Pheonix time for me (the 4G6 is a liability in a small apartment!).

                    Never mind eh?

Ok, been a bit busy over the last couple of weeks (a lot of work, a lot of rain and a new starter at work who turned out to be a party animal - thankfully for my liver, bank balance and relationship(s)[1] he's gone on to the Australian office!).

Yesterday, I took the T Rex 450 out and crashed it. That wasn't the plan and I'm not entirely sure what happened. Damage includes the boom, boom braces, blades, linkages, main shaft, tail shaft and the pitch servo plus cosmetic to the canopy. Belt is stripped as well.

All from 3 feet. Luckily I enjoy the building part!! Probable cause is the pilot, and very likely not perfect trimming. It drifted back and left from the hover and I over corrected I think.

Parts should be here by the weekend, and I'll try again. The clone has arrived so I might practice with that.

                      Bugger.

[1] Hmm I seem to have a few more girlfriends than I started with. To be fair they ARE pretty. Which is nice.
