  • Moving On Up - what next?

    Hi Folks

I'm sure this question has been asked and answered thousands of times, so I apologise in advance.

First, some background. I'm a first time poster to this forum. 6 years experience in fixed wing flying, both methanol and electric. A 'veteran' (lol) of 15+ hours on a simulator. Hovering is good and I've gotten bored and started to play around with some entry-level 3D type manoeuvres. I can produce something that resembles a tick-tock (both tail-up and tail down), tumbles, rolls, loops, stall turns etc. Of course, thats all on a sim (RF G3), where repairs are frequent and cheap .

I've recently purchased a small electric heli (Solaris 3D from SMC, a re-named mini-pred) and I've done my first hovering. I'm now thinking about something a little bigger and am considering my step up.

So my question is, which one? Do I go for a .30 for a .50. If so, which would you recommend? I've got some standard sized digital servos lying around (futaba 3152) and a GY401 on the Solaris, so I guess I'll need a airframe, motor and some starting bits and bobs.

Your thoughts and suggestions please, kind sirs.

    Regards
    Andrew

    Hi Andrew
Personally i'd go raptor 50 more stable than a 30 some will point you at a knight 50. Dont own 1 never flown 1 but parts are readilly available for raptors and cheap. engine you cant beat an os 50 sxh your servo's and gyro you will however need a fast tail servo as you have a futaba 401 i'd suggest a futaba 9253 or 9254 are fine. If you go for a heli that has ccpm you will need 3 servo's the same as they work together for pitch roll and cyclic and for and aft to us thats elevator LOL. Thats my 2 bobs worth and welcome to the forum and happy flying.
    Regards Steve

As a noob (with promise) I would recommend a 50 nitro too.

Raptors are still very good machines apparently and I guess it should depend on other factors like what other people in your club fly, whether there are are any dealers stocking parts locally, etc.

In my case I'm one of the Knight 3D fans and I'm sure you would be happy with one. I keep a stock of spare main shaft, feathering shafts, skid bows, boom and flybars (all very cheap) so in the event of a minor crash I can get going the same day. However ordering from Skyline is easy and quick.

There other alternative might be the Hirobos but they will be more expensive on parts so I don't see the point.

        I run:
        Knight 3D
        3 x 3152s on the cyclic (CCPM)
        Futaba 401/9254 on the tail
        OS50 Hyper
        CSM Revlock 20 - govenor

For Heli fuel - I use Magnum 20%

        Good luck!

          raptor/knight/sceadu 50, os50sxh/hyper, gy401 and 9254 tail servo (a must).
If ya wanna get a 30 then go buy raptormadsteves rappy 30 that he has in the classifieds section. Should get you going if money is an issue. Dont take that because you can do that stuff on the simulator your gonna be able to do it in reality because i can almost guarantee you wont be able to.

Yip, I'm well aware of the difference between reality and a Sim. I've used a sim for many years to practise fixed-wing aerobatics first. Even with the same plane, its never the same. The 'space-bar-reset' doesn't work as well in real life.

Thanks for the advice, though. It does seem that the Raptor 50 titan is a popular machine!

                Hi Steve

Thanks for this. I'm surprised you've not pointed me to the .50 that you're selling?

                Regards

Frankly, If I'd not just spent about the asking price on my electric, I think you'd have a buyer.

Whats the difference between the Raptor v2 SE and the Titan? Is the Titan V3?

Std heli with metal rotor hub and carbon baseplate/fin set thats the se. Titan has longer boom pull pull on pitch and elevator new colour scheme about sums it up lol. But prob forgot something but i'll be corrected lol. And yep i believe titan is v3.

Steve is correct in his summing up,either Raptor is a fine choice

I think the 50Se has or is about to be discontinued and a Titan SE was in the pipeline

just a quickie I bought a raptor 30, price and availability drove me to it, but now if I were doing it again I would go the extra and plump for a 50 straight off.

but now im looking at going 50 which means ill probably have to sell off the 30 at some point. and of course its just more hassle than you really need
                              All the best
