  • stuck in a rut

    hey guys

i started flying helis a year or so ago and was in a very good flying club with all the heli and fixed wing help u could ever need nw ive had to relocate with my job.

im happy with fig 8s, circuits, general handling but now want to get in to better things ,loops, rolls etc i have 3 helis now , a mini titan , rap 50 pod n boom and a rap 50 in the md530 body shell

i relocated to hook near basingstoke and im in the raf club nearby but cant seem to find anyone who is in to heli flying and cld help me out, the local heli club is maxed out with members.

im finding myself now drifting back to planes so i must nip this rut in the butt!!

Can any of u chaps out there give me some guidence/help please

    thanks

In the absence of any heli-peers, get a simulator to stimulate your interest. If you're at a sensible competency level, you should have a good idea of how to do those moves - you just need to have a go without the risk of exepnsive damage.

I'm in a similar boat, but don't have a sim. I'm now using my oldest, least-important-to-me heli to try out new things up at the field. It's a Sceadu 50, and is about 4 years old. It's served me well and owes me nothing, so I try out new moves always with that heli first. I've got the hang of loops ok, stall turns, 540s, nose in and autos now with all my helis, but for all of these I always did it with the Sceadu first - the olde faithfull. I'm now working on stationary flips - forwards and backwards are just about sorted at height, and I'm begining to bring them lower. Stationary rolls in both directions are my current thing with the Sceadu. Doing these stationary gives you one less thing to worry about than in forward flight.

The only difference is, I have got like-minded flyers at my club who are always handy for advice before trying something daring.

I don't have a sim because my computer is a Mac, and my work laptop isn't powerful enough for one, and I do believe that this has stunted my flying development, but like I said - I always try something new for the first time with the heli that is (a) least important to me, and (b) has the power and ability to do the move.

        Hi,

I presume the club which you wanted to join was FMHC ? I fly there and at Basingstoke but Basingstoke it's mostly a plank club.

I'm know expert but I can probably help you out in the basics loops, rolls stall turns etc

        Simon.

I remember being completely stuck in a rutt 2 years ago.

I'd been flying my first heli (a Shuttle Plus) for about 2 years or more. I'd thrown away the training skids after about 6 flights from starting and was happy hovering around in front of me, a bit to my left hand side, a bit to my right hand side, a bit of left hand side on, and a bit of right hand side on. That was it for my first year.

Then my club mates kept egging me on to do a circuit, so I went for it, got half way around, used too much roll axis in the turn and rolled it inverted with very little negative collective pitch available. It went in up-side down.

I promptly fixed it and went back to my hovering, a bit to my laft hand side, a bit to my right hand side, a bit of left hand side on, and a bit of right hand side on etc etc.

I carried on like this for another year - just couldn't get my head around taking the heli for a fly around the sky. My club mates used to take the mickey and accuse me of "Extreme Hovering" all the time.

Then, 2 years ago, we all went to RC Hotel in Corfu. I booked an hours heli lesson there every day with the sole intention of learning circuits. It worked a treat. Have never looked back since. I still take new things very slowly and carefully, but no longer in a rutt, always moving forwards with my ability.

                  No it's a crap club

only joking, definatly worth the drive especially in the summer can make a day of it then not a wasted journey.

thats why I haven't been down for a while, waiting for the better weather.

                  Simon.

you'll probably know Justin & Dave Mackey then if you fly at FMHC?

i know neither of them have flown much in the last year or so as we've all been doing the 1/8 Rallycross Nationals but they'll both be flying more this year on the few spare weekends we'll get

                        Hi,

I have only just rejoined FMHC this year, but yes I do know them from when I was a member before. They were getting more into the 1/8 racing then.
