  • Shakey start with B400

I bought a B400 last week and the phoenix sim on which I have been practicing trying to hover. It started of quite calm today and I have a reasonable sized back garden so I thought I would take the B400 out of the box and start it up for the first time. The heli shook a lot more than I thought at low rotor RPM but seemed to stabilize as I increased the RPM. Everytime I mustered the courage to take off a few inches and increased the RPM, a big gust of wind blew and scared the pants off me! I never did get off the ground so I've ordered some training gear for 400 size helis and I'll give it another go next weekend. Is it normal for them to shake so much although I was shaking quite a bit myself.

    HI mate

Yes its quite normal for this to happen at low rpm. Mine is the same.

You may be intrested in some stickies on taming the blade 400

Just keep going with Phoenix it helps so much.

Not to sure what heli you are choosing to fly in Phoenix but I would suggest starting with the easyfly 500. Its setup to be very docile so you will find it much easier to hover when compared to the blade 400 model. Once you get more confident on this model then you can start looking at some of the more tricky models

      Hiya Headgecutter,

What model are you practising with in Phoenix ??
Personally, I would suggest you start with one of the bigger 600 or 700 size models. The B400 in Phoenix is a bit of a handful when first starting out.
Low wind and training gear is good for those first tentative hops.
As for the vibration when spooling up, well it may be that your blades need balancing. Or it could just be the blades being a bit off centre in their grips until the head speed picks up.

Thanks for your advice, I was using the B400 within phoenix and you are right, it is a real handful. I was beginning to think I was too old (44) to learn these new skills. I'll try a bigger heli and thanks for the links bolders. At least it encouraged me to cut the grass for the first time this year to make room for a landing pad!

lol ive been thinking the same thing about cutting the grass lol

You are never too old to learn and 44 isnt really that old

With plenty of phoenix practice you will be amazed at how quickly it all comes together and you have no problems flying any of the models available.

Its great fun just flying about and doing stuff you would never do in real life but I also recomend putting in plenty of practice hovering in all orientations. It will help all other parts of your flying no end.

Oh and i like to play on the ballon bursting now and again as well

also check your blades are not too tight in the grips. fold them out and with the flybar inline with the boom hold the heli nose down by the tail boom and give it a quick jerk up,the blades should be just free enough to fold forwards.

            in phoenix
            click model/edit
then in the first box click new and type in a name.
then click main rotor tab and reset the following values
            hover stability to 110%
            tail power loss to 25%
            vortex lift loss to 30%

            click the tail rotor tab
            set gyro sensitivity to 90%

click finish and it should save as a new variant

that should feel more like the real thing

just had mine flying in the wind .... great fun!!

              Hi boggy

For what heli are these Phoenix settings for. If this is for the blade then I will have to try them although I was under the impression that you had moved onto bigger and better helis.

I have found in phoenix that when i throttle down in normal (i.e. pitch at about -3) the heli drops much slower than in real life. Is something you have experienced. any ideas ?

              Cheers
