This is not to catch you out but what is your decision to want a metal gear servo for the rudder? In the past it has been shown that the metal wears badly unlike nylon/plastic gears and so they produce slop. For the tail this is not what you want. I don't know how good the Align gears are for wear though or whether the metal gears now are better than they were a couple or so years ago.

Think I can help throw a little light on this decision, Andy and I came to the conclusion the heli flipped out when a plastic servo cog gave way and I had sung the praises of MG for the Cyclic.

I think the idea of MG came from watching the heli commit Harkari and the desire to prevent the recurrence of such the tail servo was an afterthought!

Are the better Tail Servos's equipped with the plastic cogs then?

This is where I am still in the dark myself. Currently I am using the Futaba S9256 which is working well. When I read on other forums servos with metal gears going sloppy 'cause of wear then this will not be good on the tail.

Anyone show me I am wrong please with long term use and abuse because for the money the 620 can't be beat.

            Hey.

The majority of high end tail servos are plastic geared, as like Andy has mentioned the metal geared servos do get sloppy quite quickly. This will be made worse by a gyro constantly making small and quick corrective changes.

Ive not tried one but the Align DS650 is meant to be very good, I know Duncan Osbourne's using them in his 700's for instance and he wouldn't stick with it if it didn't cut the mustard.
There are some new servos from MKS (from memory) which I have noticed have metal gears and I think this includes their fast tail servo to. However bear on mind that an MH servo is not fully MG as there is always a sacraficial plastic gear in there somewhere.

I suggest digital Futaba S9254. Is really fast, perfect time of response, strong and exactly what I need for my Gaui 425 (500 class):
              • Tail 0.06s/3.4Kg
              • Torque 4.8 Kg/cm
              • Speed 0.06 sec/60

"The metal gear servos are not recommended for the tail because the metal gear servos wear faster and have more backlash than plastic gear servos, which will result in less precise tail control (with the exception of the Volz Speed-Maxx XP which is specifically designed for tail pitch control)"
