my thoughts are toward a t-rex 500 for my first outdoor heli, but do i build it myself or buy it ready built, is it difficult to do as a complete novice, interested to hear the pros and cons - thanks guys and gals

build it yourself that way you learn what goes where in the event of an inevitable crash!

I think that building the 500 for yourself is the better route.

You will gain a much better understanding of the mechanics and it's part of the learning process as well.

The build is actually pretty straight forward (just finished my 500 build last week). There are plenty of build videos available and the manual is pretty good, in addition there is a ton of help available on this forum if you get a bit stuck. Just take it one step at a time and be patient!

The bottom line is that if you are the one to build it, then it makes the flying that much sweeter!

      Cheers and good luck,
      Simon

Agree also, you will probably have to fix it at some point (unless you can afford to send it away every time) so it would be nice to know how it is all supposed to go together originally.

              It is difficult to say?

I have just built one and it was not rocket science, but then I am fairly handy with a spanner and screwdriver because that is my job and what I am paid to do, I fix aircraft for a living.

If you are a complete mechanical incompetent though I would imagine it would be very difficult to build it well enough for it to hold together and fly well.

Only you know your level of skill with a spanner, nothing wrong if you are rubbish with one, different people are good at different things. One thing though, if you think you will be pretty much ok but may struggle with specific Heli related aspects, this forum is absolutely chock full of helpful friendly people who will provide advice and guidance
