trex 500 esp ball links

HI all. I'm mid build on a 500 esp ( my first build ) and I'm not sure which ball links to use on the servo arms ( long or short ). I've watched a u/tube vid that says use the longer ball links so as to get a straight shot from the swash to the servo link, So what I need to know is WHAT THE HELL IS HE ON ABOUT??? and will someone please assure me that all newcomers to this amazing yet frustrating hobbie feel the same sense of (help I'm drowning in a sea of information and I need to lie down in a dark room with a bottle of stella) sensation that I'm feeling right now.
