Have you thought of a Raptor 30 ?

You can get them ARTF for about £250 with a reasonable spec and then you can upgrade to .50 size once you feel the need.

For me I started with the Trex 500, then I got the Raptor 30 V2 and I have just purchased a Trex 600n to progress onto later this year.

I think someone already mentioned it but you can get 6S lipos for the Trex 500 from Hobby King in HK for about £30, so not as expensive as they were say 12 months ago when I bought mine

Raptor 30 or trex 500 would be my 2p worth. Rappy is great, you will not hear many complain about them. Economical and built like a tank.

In fact forget the 500 go for the rappy

If i was to start again would definately go for a raptor so much easier to fly than the 450. but i do like something a bit differant thats why i went for the outrage velocity. Don't really know why most people go for the trex, no douting it's quite a good heli as a lot of people on this site will tell you. but at the end of the day they are all basically setup the same way so you should not really have any trouble setting up any heli. But if you ever get stuck there is always someone here to help. You pays your money and make your choice.
Good luck with what ever you choose
        Just enjoy

I know there is almost a love / hate thing with them but you might look at the Ely.Q Vision 50 Ultimate or Competition for something different but not expensive.

I have the Ultimate and actually never had the problems with links that were reported. It has the advantage of being CCPM with the servos direct to the swash so setup will be similar to the 450 and the control response is very quick due to the lack of linkage and combined torque of the 3 servos.

The only reason I have not flown my Ely.Q more is due to engine troubles (which hopefully are sorted now).

I like the replies so far There is a bloody minded part of me that really wants to go for something different, so I will start reading about Raptors and ElyQs

My head says Trex, my heart says perhaps Raptor.

Nothing wrong with the new Rpators

Its just the cost of Aligns are cheaper, especialy with all the combo deals.

Just go with what you like the look of. Nothing worse than having your 'second choice', been there done that, you just end up selling it quicker

Hi Alex I'm in the same place as you and I've just bought a Trex 500 ESP and I'm glad I did I worked Out the cost of a 600 and this was a much cheaper opotion and from what i can see on youtube ( as its not built yet ) this thing is a brilliant little heli to start on. More stable that a 450 but not quite a 600 which in my beginners opinion is a good place to hone your skills in preparation for a leap to nitro helis as by then you should be more than able to handle a bigger model.

I know what you mean - that is why I went for the Outrage G5 and my final shortlist was; Thunder Tiger Mini Titan E325, Beam E4 or Outrage G5. I did not want a Trex 450 SEV2 because that was what most people were telling me to get, and I wanted ti be different. I love the G5.

The G5 proved too much, and hence the Innovator, which again different - and boy for me what a good choice - it really got me flying.

However my next machine is a second hand Trex 500 CF - sitting in a box in the garage.....

My copy of Phoenix is getting a lot of use and it's already saved me a fortune in prevented crashes I'm only on my 6th day of 5 batteries on the Innovator and am happy hovering nose in as well as forward flight nose in, so Phoenix must be doing something. I think side on hovering is harder than nose in TBH ( and anticlockwise turns on my left- still very challenging)

I suppose the Trex500 could be a good step given that I already have a DX6i, then look at something bigger if I am still as enthusiastic. There is still a huge amount of mileage in my Innovator, but I have a feeling something is really going to click over the next few weeks.

If you have the dx6i then unless you want to upgrade to a 7 channel radio i would aggree and go for something like the t-rex 500, i have one and they are a wicked heli.I also have a innovator exp and this is so much fun, just to let you know they are also very strong i have had 2 crashes in the last 3 weeks on the innovator (inverted crash)and both times the repair bill was less than £30, although i did repair the c/f canopy and replaced a set of blades. So i find i can try new things and not have to worry about a massive repair bill.

I would say the Raptor is a great heli so you won't go wrong there, and if you wanted to go electric then the T-rex 500 is a great compromise between size and lipo costs.

I started with a Twister CPv2. After about 3 weeks I bought a raptor 30 and wish I had done it before i bought the twister, so much nicer to fly and it was hell of a lot more stable! I was gonna stretch the Raptor to a 50 but decided i wanted 2 heli's so I just bought a 600LE which should be maidened on Sunday Hopefully!!!
