  • Blade 400 settings for Phoenix

Can anyone help me with the settings for Blade 400 on phoenix i need to make it for a beginner and set by set as i'm a thicko!

Just my personal experience but rather than try and tune a 450 class heli to be more stable, just fly something bigger. It will save lots of time messing around.

I know it is not as cool as flying 'your' heli, but it has exactly the same effect

        Hi Franksie,

As a beginner in the same situation as yourself I have managed to set up my Phoenix programme to make the Blade 400 model very easy to fly in simple 'Hover' exercises. At this stage in my 'Heli career', thats all that I am trying to master!

I found that attempting to 'fly' the Blade 400 [or any other 3D electric] model using the default settings on the Phoenix was [for me] next to impossible - I merely ended up with a cyber dustbin full of bits. With the tamed down settings I am beginning to get to grips with controlled 'flight'

Bit busy just at this moment, but I will get back to you ASAP with the settings that I am using and hope that this will be of some help.

            Hi Franksie,

Before getting down to the details it would help me to know how far you have got in working with your Phoenix programme and the Transmitter that you are interfacing with the Sim programme.

My modifications to the default settings for the Blade 400 in the Phoenix programme [I am using version 2.5u - I think this is the latest update] came as a result of discovering the rchelicopterfun.com website and the detailed notes 'Set up tips for 400 RC helicopters' published as an E-Book by John Salt. In this [and a couple of other supporting E-Books] he sets out exactly how to tame a 3D electric heli using the Blade 400 as his example. This was a real breakthrough!

So the task was to transfer the 'tamed' settings to the profiles in Phoenix for Transmitter and Blade 400 to somewhere near John Salt's recommendations. This is not too complicated to do - well not once I had some idea what I was trying to accomplish!

I am using the Spektrum DX6i transmitter as supplied with the Blade 400 kit.

So my assumptions for you are that:-

            * You are using a Spektrum DX6i TX

            * You have gone through the calibration process using the Phoenix
programme and have got the basic TX setup using 4 channels and that
the control inputs are all operating in the correct sense.

            * You are then at a stage where you can go to the 'Model' directiory,
click on the Blade 400 and have a go at 'flying' it.

From this point you will have to 'Edit' the Spektrum TX profiles in the Phoenix programme and create a 'custom' version to use with the Blade 400 model [or any other heli model that you want to fly in 'tamed mode'] This is easy to do. I have allocated Channel 10 on my Spektrum TX as a 'Phoenix Sim Channel' - but I don't think that this is really necessary as you make no changes to the calibration settings in the TX itself - all changes are done in the Sim.

You will also have to make a few changes to the Blade 400 Model profile in Phoenix and create a dedicated 'tamed' profile. Once done, this will appear in the Model menu and will be the one that you use for training purposes. The default variants are not changed and are still available should you wish to frighten yourself by trying to fly the full 3D version!

If you can let me know where you have got to I will then put together a text on how to get all the above done. I have taken some screen shots of the various stages in the process as these will probably be of help in seeing exactly what I have done.

            Look forward to your input.

The easiest way is to just add expo to the ailerons, elevator and rudder.

Load the blade 400 into Phoenix. Then click on model >>>> Edit >>>> Fine tuning.

Then increase the expo on each control to about 30%

Try this and either increase or decrease each setting untill you are happy with the way it handles.

Another thing you can do is to lower the simulation speed by going into System >>>>> Programme setup >>>> Physics, where you can lower the sim speed a little to help you get the feel of things

                      Hi Franksie,

Apologies for not following through on my promise to give you some settings for the Phoenix and Blade 400. A small work crisis put me on the other side of the planet for a while and other things were a priority. I hope that you have managed to get things sorted and are 'flying' the Blade 400 on your Phoenix.

In fact my own method would have put you on the wrong track! Having studied the suggestion from tiddler/Graham in his very clear explanation of the Tx calibration procedure, I realised that I had been going to great lengths to fudge the Phoenix settings to compensate for the fact that I had set-up and calibrated my Spektrum DX6i incorrectly in the first place - Dumb!!

So a big 'Thank you' to Graham for showing exactly how it should be done - how great to have someone who really knows what he is doing to help.

So, if you haven't already got there - simply follow Graham's set-up and calibration procedure and then change any of the collective/throttle/servo parameters in the Tx to get the 400 to fly the way you want - so much easier.

                      Good luck

                      Ian
