Well, last night I went and took the plunge and joined my local club. It just so happened that Wednesday is their indoor flying night, so all day Wednesday I took real care to get my Twister 47g ready, charge the batteries, plug my TX in, make sure I had matching crystals, and load it up into the car (not a big job to be fair).
Thankfully, the local school hall is their preffered venue and it's only a 5/10 minute drive from where I live. As per usual though, I arrived to find the carpark in pitch darkness but I spotted a few folks having a crafty cigarette and went and asked. I needn't have worried as they were really quite friendly and pointed me to the hall down the corridor.
So, I plucked up my courage (and my fees) and gathered my stuff together and went in. I walked into what can only be described as a swarm of these little PiccoZ helicopters buzzing around the hall. I honestly think that during the night there were never any less than 2 in the air at any one given moment, and for what they cost they're a fantastic little toy. After the money had changed hands for my insurance and membership I decided to commit a little aviation.
I must be honest, I was actually nervous!
So, as she always does, the little Bell 47g spooled up and took to the air in a decidedly shaky fashion whilst trying to dodge the less manouverable PiccoZ's. It must have taken me about 3/4 mins to stop the shake from my hands being reflected in the helicopter especially as the harder I tried to look relaxed, the worse it got...
Afterwards, I had a really pleasant time, I only flew once more myself, the most memorable thing was a little formation dodging with two other 47g's. It really does make all the difference to fly with others, I'm not sure I'll make the next 3d masters, but a few helpful hints have already improved my flying and it's fair to say that I'm hooked. Next Wednesday is our next flying night and I'm already looking forward to it, especially as I'll not be so edgy and will be able to enjoy the flying more.
