  • HK450 or HK500

Howdy guys after a bit of advice from someone who knows what they are doing.

I have been on the Hobby King website and been looking at HK450s and HK500s, the prices seem unbelievable, even with the postage. Question is, if I were to order, which should I go for, I have read that a 500 size bird will be more stabe, but is that a load of boohockey?

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Cheers.

The HK500 will still require all of the electrics as I'm sure it's just for the frame and drive gear. You'd be still better off with a Trex500 or the HC500 (roughly about same price).

The 500 is alot! more stable than a 450 flys better and is generally nicer all round than a 450. But i would not touch one from HK there such a false economy and all that plastic on a 500 scares the life out of me.

2 models of 500 from HK.

There's a T500 which for the most part is plastic and is certainly one to avoid.
Then there's a 500GT which is almost entirely metal including the frame, which seems to be reasonable.

A viable alternative would appear to be the Concept Copters 500 in the UK which has had good reports so far from the chaps on the forum that have tested them and CC have proven aftersales, something you won't see from HK.

Its your money and your choice, ask around someone may do you a deal on an Align 500 ESP?

          Hi Badger,

I have both a HK450 and the 500GT(metal one). I started with a proper trex 450se but was crashing it too much so swapped to the HK cheapies instead (i've since learned regular crashes is a sign of doing something very wrong ).

HK450 - smaller size opens up more flying sites nearby, 3s lipos are becoming commodotised and you can pick up a few for very little, as stable as a 450 can be, cost to maintain very low.

HK500GT - lipo's far more expensive, big size means need to get some proper isolation to fly, easy to build as so big (although I found the hobbycity motors useless and bought an align one in the end), BUT far more stable machine and less of a wrestle in the air (for me at least!).

So I've ended up with both for different things - the 500 when im heading out for a few hours fly at a decent field a trek away, the 450 I just take to the local park when i few spare minutes. I think its easier to chalk up airtime with the 450 so I'd go that route first... im sure others who know more than me will differ

            Hi fiercebadger.

I have an Align 450 and a couple of Align 500s, one of the other guys locally has the metal HK versions of these.

If you drop me a PM with contact details we'll arrange for you to have a look at these so that you can make your mind up which will suit you best and see if we can help you get started.

            All the best.
