  • IC/Nitro Engines and Greasing

I've just cleaned an engine up and was wondering should I grease the crankshaft bearings and any other internal engine parts? I know the fuel has lubrication but wondered if it's recommended to do this at all.

So leave the bearings dry. Just found that OS recommend 4-in-1 or weight shock oil.

yeah, my mate always greases them and i have to spend about 2 tanks trying to flush it out again, just run your 1st tank abit rich to get them lubed up, everything will be fine after that

Haven't as yet David as I've been out all day at archery. About to work on it now. No I haven't managed to get the carb off yet as I haven't dremmelled the screw. Will do it shortly.

Either put some of your fuel in an open container. Then wait for the nitro and methane to evaporate. Then put the oil on the bearings. Or put some 3 in 1 oil on the bearings. Do not leave them dry.

Evo Andy have just put some 3-in-1 on them and let them rotate around draining off the excess.

It is only for the initial startup. Once the engine has been run they will stay coated with the oil that is in the fuel.

On another note, it needs a new piston ring

You want me to buy a new one David as they cost £15.99?

Top of the piston head looks a bit pitted aswell and there is fine scratch marks on the piston wall on one side.

                        Good question?

Is that why it didn't run well? If so, then why not?

If the rest of it is OK then I guess it's good to replace it. How is the bore?

The piston lining looks reasonably good David.

As you can see in the photo there is a small part of the piston ring just in front of the piston. Also here is a photo of the cleaned up pipe.

Probably best to get a new ring then.

Do you want me to do this or are you happy to.

I don't mind doing it David but if I can't get it going after that I'd like to be reimbursed for the piston ring. Check out the pipe condition
