Cool, will get the heli back indoors in a little while and remove the engine and have a bit of a look over. I set the idle/needle back to factory so idle out so that the screw is level with casing then one turn (approx 0.5mm in). Then opened up the needle so that it was 1.5 turns opened from closed.

Is there any recommended way of cleaning a carb (eg. WD40)?

Update just read a motorcycle carb maitenance and they were talking about a carb dip, boiling in water or boiling in lemon juice. Anybody tried these techniques?

I've just cleaned out the carb on my OS37 as it would not come onto the main needle when reving it up. It was pretty blocked up and I used some wd40 and a tooth brush to clean it out. Fired it up afterwards and it went alot better.

As for fuel I've been using Model Techniques Copta-mix 20% for a couple of weeks on the OS37 with an OS#8 plug. No problems so far and I just need to finish fine tuning next time out.

I would strip down the card, also worth checking behind the fuel inlet nipple as fluff can build up here (no idea where it comes from though!). Also worth sticking your finger over the muffler exit while cranking it over to choke it... only needs choking for a second or so though

does the engine even try to run?

Darryl, check your clunk tube,it could be too soft and blocking slightly as its bent, chap up the field had this problem,he was too busy blaming the engine to see it

I have had the backend off to lock the conrod so I could put on the gear, clutch and cooling fan. Was pretty sure I tightened it up but it might need a smear of silicon just to seal it. About to pull it apart in a little while

Yeah I've got the drill in reverse, made that mistake a few weeks back. The old lightbulb activated in my head and I started picturing direction of blade rotation and realised that the engine would be going the other way

Just feeling a bit annoyed as I was hoping to get it airborne this weekend. Have to wait a few weeks I think and buy a brand spanking new one, atleast it will save me the agro.

Btw, I've tried two different OS No8 plugs and both glow orange like a filament of a torch battery.

Ok so we've established the glow is ok, now if your sure the exhaust is clear the next check requires a little puff.
With some fuel in the tank, remove the pressure pipe from the exhaust and gently blow down the pipe, if you have the fuel pipe removed from the carb you should have fuel squirt out of the pipe, if it does'nt your clunk pipe or the filter on the end of it had it.

Sean, so let me get this straight. If the fuel line from the exhaust end is removed and I pressurise (eg. blow into it) the fuel tank it should squirt out the nozzle on the pipe right?

I'll give that a go in a tick as I've just removed the pipe and boiling it in a bit of persil small and mighty to remove all of the oil off of it. So far so good

Yep kind a. Blow into the exhaust pressure pipe and fuel should come out of pipe that would normally be attached to the carb on your engine.
