Helicopter sizes?

I've seen lots of people on here refer to helicopters by sizes, 400, 450 and 700 etc. Make actually decides what size the helicopter is? Is it the measurement of something on the model?

Generally, its the approximate blade size

I.e a T-rex 600 uses 600mm blades, a Gaui 200 uses 200mm blades (Blade length not rotor diameter)

But its not an exact science, Thunder Tigers raptors for example, are split by engine size, 30/50/60/90 which doesn't exactly cross over to the blade length naming convention

And a blade 400 uses 325 blades.
Its all very confusing i aint got a clue

I thought with nitro, the size was purely dictated by engine size.
This does'nt hold true with electric powered heli's

I have been asked by a couple of people about what the numbers mean in relation to helicopter sizes. I thought I would post this as a very general guide.

Electric Helicopters
These come in three basic classes, micro, mini and larger

Micro

These are powered by speed 300/350 class motors and weigh less than 400 grams.
This category includes :

Walkera 4
Ikarus Piccolos
GWS Hummingbird
Century Hummingbirds
E-sky Honeybee
And many variations of the above.
Blade diameter tends to be around 527mm

Mini - Sometimes known as 400 size heli's

These are powered by speed 400-480 class motors and weigh between 400 and 700 grams.
Helicopters in this category include:

Align TRex
X-400
Zoom 400
Shogun
Blade diameter tends to be around 640 - 670mm

Larger

These are powered by Speed 540 class motors or larger and weigh more than 700 grams.
Helicopters in this category include:

Lite Machines Corona
Ikarus Viper 70/90
Ikarus ECO 8/16
Mikado Logo 10/14/20/24
Henseleit 3DMP
Minicopter Joker/Joker 2/Maxi-Joker
Blade diameters vary as the group is so large, but some can be upward of 1000mm.

Nitro Helicopters

This one is a little easier. You have 30,50,60 and 90 size. With nitro, the number relates to the size of the engine, so a 30 would be a 0.30 cubic inch displacement engine, a 50 a 0.50 cubic inch displacement engine and so on.


Blade diameters, 30 is around 1100mm, 50 is around 1200mm and the 90's come in at around 1420mm

Hope this makes it a little easier to understand.

A general rule of thumb is that, if you take the average crash repair bill and multiply it by four, that's about the size of the heli, i.e.:

Cost Heli size
£100 400
£125 500
£150 600
£175 700

We did have a thread once, back over the summer, about heli sizes with some actual dimensions and stuff but I cannot find it now.

Basically 400 / 450 don't seem to have a relationship between the name and the blade size. The blades are 325 ish mm.

The 500 is a fairly new thing, named I guess to fit between a .30/.50 size heli and a 450, but the blade size is around 420mm (I think).

Then you have .30 and .50 class helis which are basically the same thing
as a 600, which is named appropriately as it has 600mm blades (.30 and .50 relate to engine size in cubic inch displacement and .30 helis usually run 550mm blades).
.90 size is the same as 700 in general but can go over 700mm blades.

Then most petrol powered helis are 700 size or larger.
