  • Coming back to rc helis

    Hi everyone,

im finally coming back to rc helis after selling my much loved shuttle zxx a few years ago. At the time i was going at it alone and with help from the sim got to the hovering stage without training legs and with no crashes, and was ready for figure 8's when i decided to sell up.

But now thanks to the esky belt cp and a hong kong trex 450 im back (and i concept srx being restored but im a hirobo guy at heart). Anyway what i would like to know is old school mid stick hover or 3/4?

When i left the hobby i read that zero at centre was the way to go, just upping the lower pitch when first starting out. And i see the belt cp and other rtf helis come set up with zero at centre so should i carry on and learn this way or go back to mid stick hover?

    thanks
    Mark

Heya and welcome back ...think most do the centre stick 0 pitch and 2/3-3/4 stick hover and just dumb below mid stick down to say -1 to -3 ....

As Mike has said, a lot of us fly at zero pitch midstick. Makes it a lot easier when flicking to idle up mode and wanting to get inverted and 3d etc. If you are wanting to get into that kind of flying then I would recommend this way.

          Welcome aboard!

I'm at a similar stage now as you are. I use zero pitch at mid stick, and -2 at low stick, +10 at high stick.

          It works well for me...

              Thanks everyone!

yeah im super excited to be back, although so much has changed!!

I always thought my little shuttle looked small when sat out in the field, these 450 electrics are tiny!! lol, and after having a hover on my friends blade 400 a lot harder than my shuttle used to be. I cant wait to get back to a 30/50 nitro!

And back when i got my shuttle zxx (which had the price on £329.99!!) it was all about 30 sized models for learning, now you guys are learning on these super powered 50's!, blows my mind!. I remember getting my zxx due to Mark Leavesly having one and loving it.

And i just got a trex clone for around £35 and quality of the parts are amazing! i can learn on this, crash/replace the full kit for almost less than the price of main blades for the 30 nitros!

Anyway im going to stick with zero at centre and learn this way.

              Cheers everyone!

I flew a mates zxx many years back when I was learning and it was a really nice heli (to hover - as that was all i could do). I used to fly hover at mid but shortly after moved to 0 at mid stick and have never looked back

I really miss it, i should never have sold it cause i lost money doing so and as it was my first heli i was kinda attached to it.

Still remember going into mikes models and walking out with arms full of lovely rc heli equipment *day dreams* lol

I had one of the very first Shuttles way back in the early eighties, and I too had a bit of a lay off (20 years to be exact) and you're right about things changing. My Shuttle and all the kit cost me £600 which was serious money back then, probably about a months wages for me.

I remember a boom costing £25, flybar £20, and wooden blades £30, so even the smallest crash was well over £100 and it took 2 weeks to get the parts.

Mine had a belt start which had to be clipped onto the fan shroud once it was running and the clutch had shoes & springs in it.

It's so much more fun these days!

I know what you mean about the cost, still cant quite beleive i got a full 450 trex clone for under 35 quid!.

And when i got my zxx i had the csm icg 360, remember it being quite a top of the range gyro at the time. And having to set trim to stop the drift...something even the esky hh gyro doesnt seem have and those things are like a tenner or less off ebay! lol.

Struggling at times with the build of these 450's as the parts are so tiny! cant wait to have a nitro back up and running!!

Im keeping things a little nostalgic though and running a futaba ff8 and gonna get model technics or pro-synth for the 32sx-h when i get a nitro back

6/7 years ago I was into micro 3D heli's & the cost of them then was more than cost of 450pro.
Today's outlook is fine for flying.
