  • A day for Gyros Me thinks!

I have a PG-01 Gyro from GWS... Since buying my Rappy 30 it has had this gyro fitted and every time I try to fly it, all my helix wants to do is spin to the right (Helix facing away from me). I have downloaded all info about this gyro and all looks well but I am still having problems.

Does anyone have any ideas? I know most of you are going to suggest taking it to a shop or something like that. It's just that I work all hours and by the time I get home it is far too late. I am working most weekends also until the end of the month. I have rebuilt this thing (my pride and joy at the mo)and done a good job so far (according to a lad I know who builds and flies helicopters all the time) and yes I could get him to have a look but the same applies about the obscure hours that I work...

Help please... I want to get this thing in the air!

Oh... AND... My exhaust fell off today whilst attempting to sort this Gyro problem... Not a happy bunny!

It sounds like you need to reverse your rudder direction or your gyro direction maybe both...

      Hi

Okay you will not want to hear this.... But change the Gyro...

futaba 401/9254 digital servo will transform the helicopter.

The PG-01 Gyro from GWS is well pants.... Sorry

If you check out Fast lads web site the pair will cost you 139 pounds ish cheaper than most shops (around 179).

I'd surgest getting your flying buddy to look it over...

Thread lock the exahust on well.

        Gyro's heh

You could go to Helikraft.com and get the GY401 and S9254 combo for £100 including delivery

They marked mine as a "model toy part", value $48.00 and I never even had to give Tony Blair his bit

        Took about 4-5 days overall.

Bloody bargain...Once I set it up right..

You know... I am sure I did... It's on everything else!

I am very tempted to dump the gyro for a new one. I know also that it does not have the heading hold feature that is standard on most others. It's just that It's my second helix (the first being one of those cheap 4 channel jobbies) and I was hoping to learn without heading hold. 'Why'? I hear you ask... Well I thought it might make me a better pilot...

its just one more thing to try and grasp while already trying to learn something that is very difficult. get a 401/9254 combo, it will help you out no end.

A new gyro would be nice but i suspect you wanna fly her as she is for now at least..

The gyro sounds like its sensing needs reversing,,what a gyro does is apply an opposite rudder input to the direction of rotation, fine until its sensing the wrong way,

So your heli piros to the right, senses this but its adding more right, the heli spins faster so it adds more right etc etc

Follow this proceedure and it will cure it

Open the tail rotor blades out so they are facing up/down,fire up the radio and put in a full left rudder command, the lowest blades leading edge,ie the front of it should twist to the right viewed from above, also the tail rotor linkage wire will move toward the tail..

Now that youve seen this pick the heli up and rotate it right, you should get the same reaction from the tail ie a left rudder input,if this does not happen then your gyro needs to have its sensing reversed..

I believe there is a small switch or switches on the side of it,one will do this..

Dont try and fly it until this is confirmed

Also if this heli is newly built, check the tail rotor is turning the right way,,the lowest tail blade should be moving forwards,if its not then you will also get serious tail problems, and check both tailblades are fitted the right way round so their leading edge is moving forwards during rotation

              keep us posted

A 401 etc is a cracking gyro,i would recommend it to anyone, however the gyro you have although not brilliant will get you airbourne and i used a similar one when i learnt

I have an old Kalt Baron, which I was learning to fly with, it also has a PG01, and for a basic learning to fly, was OK, when I got a new Rappy, I went the route of the 401/9254, and sure it is easier, but the old PG01 should be capable of working for basic manouvers, albeit more difficult than a HH gyro. Good luck with the setup

I have flown a rappy with a GWS PG-01, it was OK for hovering a forward fight but not the best tool for the job, if you need to reverse it you need to physically turn it around. So if it is mounted with the label right way up, you need to spin it 180° so the label is up side down.

That is just the way the PG-01 is, no switch's only a pot to set the centre point and 2 LEDs (red & green), you need to adjust the pot so both LEDs are lit when the tail is stationary.

The Pg01 does have a reverse switch by the 2 pots

Totally agree, that is why I kept the 401 off the rappy I sold and put a PG-03 on it

Then again it was a nackered V1 and sold very cheap.
