  • any help please!!!!

Hi all i am very new to this and full of questions and no one to help so any advise would be greatly appriciated!
My wife kindly brought me a twister 3D storm model heli for christmas which i was well chuffed with and couldnt wait to have a go but after reading a few things like
If you have no experience flying R/C
    helicopters, it is highly recommended
that you seek advice from your supplier
    and/or an experienced R/C helicopter
    pilot.
Read all instructions carefully prior to
assembling and before flying the helicopter.
    Seek advice should any information
be unclear. You assume all risk
    and responsibility when using this
    model.
As you can imagine this has scared me slightly, but i charged the battery got it in the garden and had a go cudnt even get it off the floor everytime its about to lift it looks as though it would topple and smash the blades in the floor!!! So im kinda frustrated to say the least, plus i dont know if it set up properly and if my hand radio device is set up properly?? i have looked on the web for guidabce on heli and radio help and i feel like im banging my head against the wall.
If any of you guys could help or post some links or even tell me if there is anywhere near leicester that do clubs and meets i would love a drive by and get stuck in!!
    Many Thanks
    steve

i have a twister storm as my 1st copter im not even trying to get of the ground yet as its a powerful machine for a beguiner. im just practicing throtle control an turning the copter to move the tail. take off will be slow a few inches of ground at 1st after the training legs arrive and iv had a few goes on the simulator. in other words be patient or you will smash it up i killed a servo 1st time i started mine.

    good luck

If you have never flown a helicopter like this before, you need to find an experienced flyer to check your heli is set up properly. These things are sold as ready to fly, but they are not, they usually need careful checking and setting up. Try and find a local club, where people will be happy to help you.

If you are serious about the hobby, you should consider buying a simulator - most people on here like Phoenix. It saves a fortune in crashes!

Welcome to the fotum, by the way.

You can find clubs on the BMFA web site, you will find that most on this site will recommend a flight sim to practice on. Most use Phoenix.

I think the best advice I could give is:

          1) Find a local club
          2) Pop down to one of their meets
          3) Ask an experienced flier there to check it over for you

Click here to find a list of BMFA affiliated clubs in your area.

Oh, and your "hand radio device" is called a transmitter by the way.

Dont forget, when the heli starts to lift you need to compensate the torque of the motor on the blades by using the rear blade, in other words which ever way it starts to fall or spin (usualy to the left) slowy push the right stick the opposite way, (think I got that right ).

Steve - As well as all the sound advice given above it would be a great help if you have anywhere to start learning indoors? (Not your living room)

Certainly in your early days you won't need a great deal of room except to practice getting the heli light on the Training Gear and finding your way round the controls.

At this time of year suitable days outside for a complete begginer are few & far between so a small hall with a smooth floor would be a massive help!

Welcome to this great hobby and enjoy

                    Here you go.
                    RADD'S SCHOOL OF ROTARY FLIGHT?

Read & follow to the letter. It's a great way of learning. Get a sim too. Phoenix flight sim is the weapon of choice. Tis a long road, but an enjoyable one......

Enjoy - it's all about fun.

Sounds like were your situation is very similar to mine, i have never flown a proper helicopter before and went and got the blade 400, i then luckily realised i couldnt fly it straight away before i tried.

I then went out and brought a cheap £20 sim, they are ok for teaching the controlls but thats about it, i then went out and brought phoenix the next day and now i wished i just brought phoenix to start with.

If you get phoenix start with something like the vibe90, its a bigger helicopter than the twister so its more stable, after you get the hang of that switch to the blade 400 which is basically the twister and then keep on flying until you can start hovering properly and moving.

What controller do you have? If you have the cheap 35mhz thing that comes with it then you will need to buy something like the dx6i to use with phoenix, but its not just for phoenix, its a amazing transmitter and can be used for your real helicopter.

+1 from here. Most of us use Phoenix Sim - it is very good (£80) and realistic. Look up this site :

                            Midland Helicopters Ltd FlightSims_FlightSim

You will also need a Tx and need to be sure whether you want to fly on Mode 1 or 2. It will be difficult to change mode in the future.

                            Hope this help

Good advice here - I thought I could fly my Blade and learned i couldn't 10 seconds later when it hit the patio!
A year or so on, I can actually keep the thing in the air and fly it about a bit but it does take practice - I had a few lessons from Phoenix model Aviation www.phoenixmodelaviation.co.uk which helped no end but IMHO a simulatior is almost essential. Also, so you have training gear - this straps onto the skids and makes the heli less likely to tip over when you start - another essential in my book.

All that said, the feeling when you can actually fly the thing about is wonderful.

Best of luck and if you need help, just post - this is a great forum...
