  • Building a heli.....maybe

    Hi all

I am new to all this and really want to learn what everything does and how they go together.
I reckon the best way maybe to get a kit and build it.
Can you reccomend any kits that would be suitable for someone that is so much a beginner that he hasn't got past the starting line

    Thanks in Advance

Well, it entirely depends upon your budget. However, Finless Bob does a range of superb build videos for just about all of the Align range of helis, and possibly many more besides.

Take a peek at some of his videos here. These are what I used to help me build my T-rex 500.

      I started with a Raptor 30 but soon moved to a 50!
Ive heard alot of good things about the Vision 50! Cheap to build and crash from what ive heard,im sure somebody can shine some more light on that!

My first 'proper' heli was my mini titan, bought as a kit. Very easy to build and repair, cheap to buy and repair, and flies really well! Can recommend the mini titan as a first heli.

The first heli I had to build from scratch was a Trex 600NSP which I still use to this day. I love it to bits and have learnt a lot from building it. I didn't have a clue when I bought it but the manual was easy to follow and you can get lots of great advise on this forum.

Raptor 30's and Mini Titans are pretty easy to put together and are reliable to fly

Both are ideal to start with

Although RTF, I would start with the CX2 mate. It's a good heli!

Both my 450 and 600N were built from scratch, the 450 when I recently bought the new Sport frame, and after a crash, I rebuilt the 600 with 2mm cf frames to replace the gf.
Finless's vids are great for the noob.

first you need to decide on whether you want to go electric or IC, then work out your budget then you can take it from there.

also a good direction to head in is to get a good sim for some flight practice, Phoenix being the favorite around here. if you go that way you will also require a transmiter to use with it.
                  All the best

                    +1!!
This is the first and most important decision to make once you get past this then look at a heli.

You can look at that aspect in 2 ways, a RTF although built should be stripped and rebuilt by the buyer regardless of where you buy it or what brand it is. If for nothing more than safety! So you learn in reverse by taking it apart first. Nice thing is that you can buy the combos with electronics etc already there, this can be a considerable saving.

Or you can buy a kit, select electronics radio etc and build it all up from scratch. Personally i like this way if the included electronics in the RTF is not to your liking or suited to you. BUT it can and often does indeed end up costing you more ths way .

                    Alex.

                      Agree with that.

Mini Titan is a tiny Raptor so has all the proper bits, just smaller. A great first helicopter kit.

Convinced the wife to buy me Phoenix for xmas

I have bought a used mCX with DX5e - my 12yo son is starting with me so I wanted a heli he would be able to succeed with.

I then found a used DX6i for sell and grabbed that aswell

I like the sound of the mini titan after having a good look at it. Want to build it as I want to know how it all works together etc. (may take a while though )
