  • Onwards and upwards....

Been thinking ahead for next year sometime...

In your opinions chaps, what would be the next logical step up from the E-Sky Dauphin? (I'll keep my Skylift, I love flying that indoors) I'm thinking about progressing onwards and upwards to something that will be happier flying outside (when we get some better weather...)

    Main criteria :

    (a) electric powered
    (b) a nice steady flyer, I'm not interested in throwing the thing about the sky
    (c) fairly compact size, I drive a small car
    (d) basic canopy style with the possibility of adding a scale fuselage as and when I feel safe to do so
    (e) not too technical to build and set up....ARTF perhaps?
    (f) easily repairable with good spares back up
    (g) priced around the £200-£250 mark

    Over to you...

slightly above your budget but the blade 400 fits the bill you'll also get a 2.4ghz dx6i radio setup with it

        E-flite Blade 400
Now that I like...that ticks a few boxes. Maybe find a good second hand one when the time comes? Or be nice to my bank manager....

Thank you for that...that's one for my list.

almost identical to the blade is the storm 3d it shares most of the mechanical parts but the frames differ slightly. and tbh its slightly better spec?(carbon blades/fins and a mains adaptor inc) downside is the radio

Same radio(or very similar) to the one supplied with the Skylift/Dauphin I think? Would that Storm be ok for outdoor flying? It looks a wee bit small, or maybe it's just the way it appears in the picture?

yes its a 400 size cp heli as is the blade. both perfectly capable of flying outdoors or sports halls.iirc you can get the twister minus radio so within your upper budget you may be able to get a s/h dx6i and rx

Thanks gents...that Storm looks as though it may be a good deal.

I'l not be spending anything until I'm totally happy I can justify the outlay, the Dauphin will be my learning tool for a bit longer.

I've budgeted to upgrade early next year after I've conned earned some more overtime, so by then the budget may have grown a bit.

Thanks again guys, much appreciated information.

Im loosing count of how many times Ive said this, but Ill say it again.
Before you even think about getting any sort of single rotor heli you should defiantly think about investing in the Phoenix simulator and and a tx like the Dx6i.
The sim will teach you all the necessary skills you need and the Dx6i will stand you in good stead for when you do finally get yourself a heli.
Jumping in at the deep end, without prior experience of flying non coaxial helis will only be a rude awakening for you. They are a world apart from what you have so far experienced.
My suggestion...... Treat yourself to Phoenix and a DX6i for xmas. You wont regret it

Humble apologies Tiddles, old chap...I'm not a total beginner to rotary flying, just somewhat...how shall we say...rusty?

I've flown a Morley Hughes 300 and an (original) Hirobo Shuttle, back in the days when the Futaba Challenger was the radio to have and electric helis were a just an eccentric's dream!
I invested in a course of lessons from a qualified heli pilot (model AND full size) and from that was allowed (under strict supervision) to fly solo when he considered I was no longer a danger to other model flyers, myself or the local farmer's live stock.

I had to present myself to him once a fortnight (even after the course of lessons had ended) to show him that I hadn't been skiving and that I could still (in his opinion) fly a heli safely. That regime went on for over six months, and believe me, that guy was worse than any RSM in the Armed Forces you care to even dream of! His by-word was 'practice'...practice, practice and yet more practice...practice until I'd be in bed at night twiddling imaginary tx sticks (no wonder I got divorced...!) I can still to this day hear him breathing over my shoulder every time I dare to look at my tx...

In my humble opinion, that was the best ever investment of my money I ever made in the world of flying model helis...I once dared to mention that I was considering buying a new heli whilst still under his wing. The look I got was far worse than any look I've ever had from a woman....say no more.

Admittedly, that was a few years ago, hence my slow and steady return to flying model helis...hang it all, his face and his words are so firmly etched in my brain, I wouldn't dare to get my wallet out yetawhile without knowing he'd be watching me from wherever he he is now!

I appreciate your words Tiddles, I'm not wishing to argue against them...I do have the simulator as supplied with the Skylift on my laptop, but there's subsitute for proper stick time, although I do play with it now and again.

Thank you sir, your guidance is much appreciated...

                          Wow Rich,
It would seem that I have seriously underestimated your previous flying experiences and suffered from a good strong dose of foot in mouth in the process and as for being called Tiddles
Seriously though, I suspect the simulator that came with your heli is probably "fms" and if this is the case then you will defiantly love Phoenix. Its a superb bit of kit and if you ever get the chance to take a look at it Im sure you would agree.
What ever you decide to do, I sincerely wish you the best and I'm sure you will enjoy your return to this great hobby

Graham, no need to blush at all chap, I can hear my tutor calling me all the names under the sun even as I peck away at the keyboard! His words haunt me, and probably will do until the end of my days...then I'll probably meet him in the afterlife!

Serious face on now...you are quite correct, my sim is the 'fms', I do find it very limited, so I think I'll go take a lookitsee at the Phoenix. (Phoenix...risen from the ashes. Very appropriate, methinks!!)
