  • Newbie asking advice

Hi all been reading some other post's on here about starting off with a larger heli. I was going to go down the mcx route n just practice indoors but im selling my car cd player for a dx6i n dont know whether just to jump in the deep end n go for a blade 400 and ill get the pheonix sim for xmas for extra practice. Advice would be much appreciated. Thanks liam

The DX6i is a good and very capable radio so I agree with you here. Get the Bind N Fly mCX and you will not need to get the radio that comes with the RTF version.

Personally I'd get the mCX and Phoenix if you can run to it. Whilst I'm sure there are many on here that have gone straight into a CP heli, there are probably just as many that crashed on either their maiden flight or shortly thereafter.

If you do go straight for the blade or T-Rex 450, dont forget your trainer legs. You can then get used to just hopping of the ground, and slowly get longer and longer in the air. If you land at an angle, your trainer legs will save you.

Alas you will find here, as in life, if you ask 10 people the same questions, you'll get probably 10 different answers.

However, your best route is to look into the answers and find a common theme. I think, if you do a little homework on the forum using the search facility, you will find a common theme here. And that theme is based around:

          - flying CP helis is pretty darned difficult
          - get a good simulator (Phoenix is the weapon of choice in these parts)
          - smaller, whilst possibly cheaper, is less stable (co-ax helis aside)
          - whatever you buy, you'll want another one (bigger, better, more expensive) within a few weeks. But buy the wrong heli to begin with and you're in danger of becoming disillusioned, frustrated and skint

Here's a few links to get you started:

The blade 400 is a very twitchy and lively helicopter. If you do get one, as mentioned, get some training gear for it before you try and fly it.

The mcx will be fine for learning the very basics. It is very stable and you can fly it in your living room which will be a bonus as the weather gets worse. Martins suggestion is a good one going this route and getting phoenix will help you no end - plus you can play with any size heli you want and get a feel for the different types.

Have fun which ever route you go.

I don't think that you'll regret that course of action, Robbo. The DX6i will stand you in good stead for your next heli too, which will come soon enough, trust me. Just best start thinking as what else you can sell to finance it.

Do keep your eyes open for used DX6i - they do crop up on here occasionally - I got mine for £40.

Edit; After I made the post below I realised two other posts had gone on.
I agree with Martin, that's a good move.

I've never flown the blade 400 but the Trex 450s can be quite stable when setup right and are very well behaved in calm conditions, so a bit of sim time and you should be able to go straight into something you won't outgrow.

                    My suggestion would be either;

                    1. Go with the MCX if you cannot get a good sim first (there was a very cheap Reflex XTR on here which, if you cannot afford Phoenix just yet, will get you hovering and basic orientation and in fact Reflex was highly touted before Phoenix came out).

                    2. Get Phoenix or other comparable sim and practice there first before flying anything for real and then get the 400 or a 450 etc and perhaps use training legs in the beginning while making that transition from sim to real life.
